Just shock to heard the news. Van Halen play in my hometown long time ago. Eddie's solo was amazing. He will be missed.

Definitely talented, but I was never much of a Van Halen fan. Regardless sad to hear. RIP.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

He was considered one of the greatest guitarists (although I found him great technically, just didn't care for his work in a musical sense)... and Neil Peart was considered one of the greatest drummers... both lost in the same year. 65 and 67 years old. Too young.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

Yeah, after Dave's ominous statements last year we've all seen this coming - but hoped that he was wrong.

It's just so heartbreaking to lose one of the greatest musical icons of the Rock era at such a relatively young age. We saw it coming, but didn't want to believe it was so close.

I love Van Halen. They have always been, and always will be, one of my all time favorite bands. Eddie was a revolutionary player who changed the game. And he co-wrote some amazing songs.

He will be missed. Truthfully, he has been for about 5 years.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

First time I saw VH, they opened up for Black Sabbath at the Cape Cod Coliseum. Then I saw them on the VH II tour at the Boston Music Hall, and then headlining back down the Cape during 'Women And Children First'. Always brilliant, even with a clown of a lead singer. The show I saw at the Boston Garden with Gary Cherone was also a good one, I liked that Gary had them play a bunch of classics that Sammy always avoided.

It’s such a shame all the wasted years the band had fighting with each other. I can’t imagine how many albums they left on table.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

RIP

I was watching some old VH videos on youtube on my smart TV a couple of months ago and never thought this would happen.

I know most people would not consider the Tokyo Dome live album as one of their best efforts but I listened to it all the time to hear Eddie and Alex play.

We were lucky to live in a time to hear his music and for some to watch him perform live.

"Beat It" might be the only Michael Jackson song I could say I would be proud to like with his guitar solo.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

RIP to an incredible guitarist. My fav artist is MJ. Just his music, not lifestyle, but hearing Eddie now on Beat it is gonna get me. I have albums 1984 and Van Halen set to go for the morning. Hearing that battle was long and arduous breaks me the most. No one should have to go out that way and so sorry he did.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

I did this a year and a half ago, and I would have never believed that in only 17 months that Eddie would be gone.

So much great music...

Seriously, when you listen to that and realize that there are a lot of other songs that could have been on that list it starts to hit home just how amazing Van Halen (the band AND the guitar player) really was.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

This really sucks. VH was the very first concert I attended at my favorite venue (Jones Beach in NY) back in 1993 during their Right Here, Right Now Tour when I was 17 & it blew me away.
Even though A Different Kind of Truth is already 8 years old, I still listen to it all the time & consider it one of their best so at least they released a great album as their last.

That show with Sabbath was 4 days before I saw the same in Niagara Falls, NY. Who did you think put on the better show?

Van Halen was THE Rock and Rock band during my high school years. One of the all time greats gone way too soon. RIP.

Re: Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

Top Five EVH Solo Masterpieces.....

The instrumental from 1982’s Diver Down is 80 seconds of delay and volume control mastery. It sounds like nothing else from EVH’s repertoire.

“Spanish Fly,” from
Van Halen II. Think “Eruption” on nylon strings.....

the opening 30 seconds. “Hot For Teacher” is blues on speed, with Eddie toggling effortlessly between lead and rhythm and hitting multiple solos.....

The first track from the band’s debut album is meaty and muscular and the ultimate launch pad for any career. “Runnin’ With the Devil” has multiple gears and EVH drives it like a Formula One pro.

At 100 seconds and free of lyrics, “Eruption” was never headed for rotation on radio. It was too hot for radio. EVH’s finger-tapping crescendo is the stuff of legend, and its impact on guitarists was like a bomb. You either heard it and wanted to be “the next Eddie Van Halen,” or you simply gave up....

I am glad their final studio statement was the kickass A Different Kind Of Truth and not the Cherone album.

While not the hugest Van Halen fan as a band, did like some songs but very respectful of Eddie's ability. RIP.

VH for sure. They had a ton of energy, and I was excited to see this new guitar player that played this amazing solo I heard on the radio, leading into a cover of "You Really Got Me". I made my friends go in early and abandon the party in the parking lot, just to make sure we didn't miss them. I was still only 16 at the time, and I liked Sabbath that night; but it really wasn't a great show from them.

Pretty much sums up my experience, too.

We were there to see Sabbath, and I was only vaguely aware of VH at the time, but was blown away. I think I bought the album very shortly after that.

We also met the members of Sabbath, on their way to the hotel, across the street, though I don't think Ozzy was with them. I guess it was shortly before he left the band, so they were probably already not socializing.

The guys from Van Halen were also hanging out a window in the hotel.

Fun night, apart from some drunken woman falling on 13 year old me, from the chair behind.
