Andy Gill, guitarist of Gang of Four, dead at 64

They were in town last year, and I didn't go. A friend of mine derisively referred to the show as "Gang of One", as Gill was the only remaining original member. Really wish I'd gone, now. Like I mentioned in the Kim Shattuck RIP thread, folks, if you're a fan of older bands and they're in your town, GO SEE THEM. You never know if it might be your last chance.

Wanna be careful how I phrase this, 'cuz I'm pretty bummed that Andy Gill is gone (seriously, listen to his guitar work...there's a style there that is immediately recognizable). But at least for once I already have all the records I want from that person. I remember recent years wanting to add some Lou Reed and David Bowie to my collection, then bam, they're gone and the price of their classic records skyrocket. Although oddly enough, both Keith Emerson AND Greg Lake die, and ELP records are still in the bargain bin. So you never know...

I can't say I was the most knowledgeable fans ever, but Entertainment! is just one of those records I never tired of listening to. Not once. Not one time. RIP.

In the movie Urgh! A Music War (my vote for best concert film EVER), GoF gives an amazing performance of "He'd Send in the Army". There's a part of the song where Gill is making a strumming motion without even hitting the strings, resulting in a guitar break that is a John Cage-like silence. His guitar work was not always pleasing to the ears, it could be cacophonous at times, but it was always damned interesting.
