The wife and I were just talking last week wondering if The Cars would ever put out any more music (we were watching their RnR HoF performance from last year). Bummer.

Awful news. I love The Cars. It was brutal when Ben Orr died. For some reason, after that, I hadn't even considered any of the others dying, so this was a shock.

Damn, this one stings. Their last album in 2011 was really great. First one in over 24 years and without Benjamin Orr. They only played 11 dates to support it, all small venues. They chose the 930 Club here in D.C. and it sold out literally under 5 minutes. I had to get my ticket at StubHub and paid big bucks to go. Worth every penny. I've seen them before in the early 80's, but they were never been better. No extra musicians on the stage. Just the four of them and they knocked it out of the park. From 2011's "Move Like This":

I was going to post that the odds are pretty good that it's drug related, but then I forgot that he's a pretty old guy to begin with.
Kinda weird that he was 75 and if Orr were alive today he'd be 74... which puts them in the same age range (or older) as Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Daltry, and Townsend.
You just wouldn't think they were as old since The Cars first album was in 1978 - a full 13+ years after those other bands.

I remember watching those videos over and over on Friday Night Videos. Less was more back then. Now that I have access to hundreds of music videos on youtube, I barely watch any of em.
So sad to lose one of a kind vocalist. No one sang like Ric.

75? I had no idea he was that old. He was older than Alice Cooper and David Bowie.

The Cars were a great band. Ocasek was a huge part of that, too.
This is a big loss, regardless of whether he was 70 (as some reports now say) or 75. Either way, he was older than I thought, and either way this is a big loss.

Total shocker....bad enough when Benjamin Orr passed away at the young age of 53 with cancer. And that was 19 years ago come October 4th. Geeee...both founding members of one Rocks Best....The Cars now gone......sad day indeed....

Great memories of The Cars in the '80s. I have enjoyed their recent Elektra Studio Albums CD box release playing the tracks on random at home.
RIP Ric Ocasek.

yeah as a Masshole and living close to Boston this one is a gut punch coming on the heels of E$. One of my favorite bands growing up. They have a good catalog and I loved nearly everything they put out. Used to blast their first Album on vinyl on my parents console stereo and that thing was LOUD AF. (this was when nobody was home of course.) One of the articles I read said it was presumed natural causes. Amazing a dude that looked like him married a smoking hot model and they were together until just last year. Magic for me is one of the song that defines summer music. they had a lot of great videos but this song really stuck with me.
