Bruce Springsteen -- Western Stars -- June 14, 2019

Bruce Springsteen’s first new studio album in five years takes his music to a new place, drawing inspiration in part from the Southern California pop records of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The album was recorded primarily at Springsteen’s home studio in New Jersey, with additional recording in California and New York. Columbia Records will release Springsteen’s 19th studio album on June 14. ‘Western Stars’ will be available for pre-order on Friday, April 26.

“This record is a return to my solo recordings featuring character driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements," says Springsteen. "It's a jewel box of a record."

The 13 tracks of ‘Western Stars’ encompass a sweeping range of American themes, of highways and desert spaces, of isolation and community and the permanence of home and hope.

The song "Hello Sunshine" and a video will be released just after midnight ET tonight.

Ron Aniello produced the album with Springsteen and plays bass, keyboard, and other instruments. Patti Scialfa provides vocals and contributes vocal arrangements on four tracks. The musical arrangements include strings, horns, pedal steel and contributions from more than 20 other players including Jon Brion (who plays celeste, Moog, and farfisa), as well as guest appearances by David Sancious, Charlie Giordano, and Soozie Tyrell. The album was mixed by Tom Elmhirst.

‘Western Stars’ Song Titles
1. Hitch Hikin’
2. The Wayfarer
3. Tucson Train
4. Western Stars
5. Sleepy Joe’s Cafť
6. Drive Fast (The Stuntman)

8. Sundown

Bruce Springsteen’s recording career spans over 40 years, beginning with 1973's ‘Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ’ (Columbia Records). He has garnered 20 Grammys, won an Oscar and a Tony, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Kennedy Center Honor, and was MusiCares’ 2013 Person of the Year. Springsteen’s memoir ‘Born to Run’ (Simon & Schuster) and its companion album ‘Chapter and Verse’ were released in September 2016, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2016. His historic 236-show run of ‘Springsteen on Broadway’ at Jujamcyn’s Walter Kerr Theatre from October 2017 to December 2018 also yielded an accompanying soundtrack album and Netflix special.

If you have SiriusXM they are already playing "Hello Sunshine" on E. Street Radio. Great song!

Thanks. Just checked it out. A slower song to lead with. Not bad.

This tour, whenever announced, should be interesting.

Wrecking Ball was great, and all of his albums of the new millennium have been fairly solid, if often uninspired and heavy-going, as one would expect from an aging rocker. A return to the more freewheeling Springsteen of the early years is an interesting and welcome morsel of news.

I didnít care much for Working on a Dream. Not really a bad album, but it doesnít have a lot of standout tracks to me. Actually one of my favorite albums of his is a post 2000 one though. I really like his 2006 album Magic. Just really solid all around if you ask me.

^Eh, kinda boring. I have always hated his put-on drawl, which I find comes out in his lesser songs.

Of his post-millennial albums, I thought Magic, Working on a Dream, and High Hopes were all of similarly good, but not outstanding quality, while Wrecking Ball and The Rising were both excellent. What's missing is a lightness and energy that his music had, including and prior to BitUSA. Of course, Nebraska (which I don't like at all) and DotEoT were both fairly dark, dour albums, and The River had a number of downbeat tracks. I prefer Springsteen when he's rocking with vigour and joy about girls and cars and drag races.

I should buy The Rising again. My friend asked to borrow it to burn and never got it back to me. Thatís been years ago and I donít see him much anymore.

Definitely one worth owning, I think, thanks to the high quality of the songs, though Brendan O'Brien's production is too ponderous.

I like both tunes, and also can't wait to hear how they fit on the album.

I like that one better than the first.

There's something with the vocals though. Not bad and not artificial, but somehow different. I don't know if I would first guess that was Bruce Springsteen singing if I didn't already know.

Re: Bruce Springsteen -- Western Stars -- June 14, 2019

Warner Bros. Pictures will release a cinematic film version of Bruce Springsteen’s latest album, Western Stars, worldwide, on the big screen. Longtime collaborator Thom Zimny directs together with Springsteen in his directorial debut. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “Western Stars,” which will make its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, is slated for release this fall. However, fans can get an exclusive first look ahead of New Line Cinema’s “Blinded by the Light,” opening in theatres nationwide today.

Springsteen’s first studio album in five years, Western Stars marks a departure for the legendary singer/songwriter while still drawing on his roots. Touching on themes of love and loss, loneliness and family and the inexorable passage of time, the documentary film evokes the American West—both the mythic and the hardscrabble—weaving archival footage and Springsteen’s personal narration with song to tell the story of Western Stars.

“Western Stars” offers fans the world over their only opportunity to see Springsteen perform all 13 songs on the album, backed up by a band and a full orchestra, under the cathedral ceiling of his historic nearly 100-year-old barn.

Emmerich stated, “Bruce lives in the super rarified air of artists who have blazed new and important trails deep into their careers. With ‘Western Stars,’ Bruce is pivoting yet again, taking us with him on an emotional and introspective cinematic journey, looking back and looking ahead. As one of his many fans for over 40 years, I couldn’t be happier to be a rider on this train with Bruce and Thom.”

Western Stars, Springsteen’s 19th studio album, has achieved global success. It has been #1 on the iTunes charts on every continent, including such countries as the U.S., the UK, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, India, South Africa, and all of Scandinavia, among other countries. It has also received rave reviews, with critics using words like “hauntingly brilliant,” “beguiling,” “gorgeous” and a “masterpiece.”

Springsteen and Zimny, who together helmed “Western Stars,” have collaborated on several projects over the years, including the documentary “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town,” and the Netflix filmed version of the Tony Award-winning “Springsteen on Broadway,” which Zimny directed.

“Western Stars” is written and performed by Bruce Springsteen, with Special Guest Patti Scialfa. Thom Zimny, Jon Landau, Barbara Carr and George Travis produced the film, with Springsteen serving as executive producer. The original score is by Springsteen.

Of course...

This is the theatre I would’ve gone to see it at and would’ve gone on that night, but I am out of the country.

Bruce Springsteen to livestream concert from home on Wednesday

LOS ANGELES — Since he can’t pop into the Stone Pony to play a surprise set, Bruce Springsteen will livestream a performance from home that will broadcast on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio on Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, according to Rolling Stone.

“Bruce will be playing songs and sharing thoughts about the times we live in,” confirmed E Street Radio host Jim Rotolo on Twitter.

Springsteen recently spoke up for the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund along with Jon Bon Jovi, Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg and others.

“These are uncertain times,” he said in the charity’s video. “What is for certain is the pain, the fear and the real needs of many of our neighbors, our friends, and certainly all of those who are on the front lines of this pandemic.”
Springsteen had planned on releasing an album and touring with the E Street Band in 2020, but those plans seem to have been at the very least delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. He surprised fans last year by dropping the news into a Q&A with filmmaker Martin Scorsese about the concert film “Springsteen on Broadway,” from his long residency in New York.

“It’s like I’ve spent about seven years without writing anything for the band,” Springsteen continued. “I couldn’t write anything for the band. And I said, ‘Well, of course … you’ll never be able to do that again!’ And it’s a trick every time you do it, you know? But it’s a trick that, because of that fact that you can’t explain, cannot be self-consciously duplicated. It has to come to you in inspiration.

Is it going to have all that laggy distortion that echoes in my ears in our new Zoom society? I would rather he make a good recording at home and then share it when he’s done. Everyone’s live from home shit sounds terrible.

Forgot to mention, the Movie is on a bit of a sale. $9.99 UHD on VUDU (Movies Anywhere title). And $2.99 to rent. No extras unfortunately, but I still picked it up at that price
