I still haven't had a chance to listen to the two albums that came in the mail yesterday, and I have another one coming tomorrow. I went almost the first 3 months of the year without buying an album, and now I'm inundated!

I've listened to the album twice so far -- once on our way to a show last night, and again this morning. My wife is head over heels in love with it (to the point where I'm not sure I'll be allowed to take the CD out of her car  ). I like it alright, but I can't really relate to the effusive praise it's been lavished with everywhere. I gravitate more towards the '80s-styled pop (hearing a lot of Tom Tom Club in particular), like:

...and I'm a sucker for the thunderous bass guitar prevalent throughout much of the album. My wife loves the entire thing, start to finish, and her favorite is one of the bigger, boomier numbers:

I love the Venom albums. As far as Amon Amarth goes those two albums above are so amazing that they made me have to reconsider my top 10 favorite artists list. I haven't been this excited about discovering a band since when I was 10 and I first heard Iron Maiden. They have a new album coming May 3 too.

Neither song does much for me, and I like bubbly female-fronted bands. Japanese ones, too. Not sure if I'm in a big rush to get this record anymore.

Yeah. It’s more an album I don’t mind rather than one I actively like. I’m a sucker for female-fronted pop, including several other Japanese acts (Scandal, Silent Siren, Yumemiru Adolescence), but I’m not bowled over by this one. Could grow on me, though. On the upside, at least my wife loves it, so it’s not wasted money!

For Japanese artists, I was always partial to The Brilliant Green, and the solo work of lead singer Tomoko Kawase. She has two alter-egos, the super sweet Tommy February, and the hard rocking Tommy Heavenly. I prefer the latter.

I also really like Puffy (aka Puffy AmiYumi in the US). Some of their 2000s work has a real bite to it, particularly the amazing 2007 album Honeycreeper. For a band that is marketed (at least in the US) to kids, it was really a change of pace seeing the video for Kuchibiru Motion, where the duo tries on lingerie in a sleazy motel room. The song kicks ass too.

I've heard of them but have yet to listen to them, but I'll definitely check them out on Spotify. Is there any particular album that's a good place to start?

Welcome To Hell, Black Metal, At War With Satan are the first three and are fantastic. I would say they sound like early Motorhead meets the first two Slayer albums.

I like everything the Danzig led Misfits put out. I used to own the coffin box set but lost it in a robbery years ago. It goes for ridiculous amounts on ebay if you can even find one so I just decided to get the single discs. I think Spook City USA is the only song from the box set not anywhere else.

Actually I meant Amon Amarth. I've been listening to Venom since the 80's and am very familiar with their work. :)

I like all the original Misfits stuff too. I still have my coffin box but it got a bit beat up over the past 20 years. Those little, fragile CD cases didn't help, although they do look cool. And I think you are correct, Spook City USA was the only unheard song in the box set, but there are a bunch of alternate takes of familiar songs as well, it's a great set! Now if only the Samhain stuff was back in print, I have most of those albums on CD or vinyl but I missed picking up the Samhain box set but don't want to pay current going prices of $150 plus for it.

Ah, my mistake. I would start with Twilight Of The Thunder God for Amon Amarth. It is the album that seemed to put them on the map with most people. I have it and the three after and think they are great. The earlier stuff is a little rougher in the production but Amon Amarth are kind of like Motorhead, AC/DC and Slayer where you know what you are going to get every time.

Thanks, I'll check that album out first.

I'm currently playing my I "Between Two Worlds" CD. Damn it's good, I wish Abbath went more in this direction musically when he went solo. Then again, the songs from his debut solo release were originally meant for Immortal, I'm hoping his upcoming second album might stray more from black metal (I love that genre but Abbath can write some great standard metal riffs, I'd like to hear more of that).

Went to a few stores yesterday, none had the Charly Bliss LP. They said they'll have it sometime this week. Wasn't a useless day though. I picked up:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...fc1719174d.jpg

70s era LA power pop. I know the song "Down on the Boulevard". Luckily, the rest of the album is just as good.

Yeah yeah, everyone has this title. It was just a super-clean analog vinyl copy. Sounds great

I stumbled upon the first volume of this a year ago on a blind buy and loved it.

Their first record was one of the best power pop records I've ever heard, so this was a no-brainer. Missed them two weeks ago when they played in Orange County, but they're coming back in September.

I've missed them the last two times they played here. First time I wasn't aware of their existence. I only realized I missed it because it was in an old weekly arts and entertainment rag I hadn't thrown out, and when doing some cleaning I thumbed through it and saw they played a little hole-in-the-wall joint. Then they were around again last year, opening up for Wolfmother. I actually could have gone, but I was going to see The Toasters already. But the venues were close enough geographically that I could have seen Charly Bliss' opening set then hustled over for the Toasters' gig. Would have been an expensive night though...

It's a similar story for me. I fell in love with "Guppy" a couple months after they last headlined in Atlanta. I would've gone to that show in a heartbeat if only I'd known that Charly Bliss existed. :p They've come by a couple times since, but it's been as an opener for Death Cab or as part of a festival package, and I didn't really feel like a 5 hour round trip for that.

The only similar thing I recall is when I bought the CD single for Smells Like Teen Spirit, just a little before it blew up and got popular, and the counter girl at Tower said that I should really buy the whole album, and I said that I already did, and that I'm only buying the single for the B-sides, and she gave me a high-five.

I'm hoping to find that Charly Bliss record this weekend. Sure I could get it off of Amazon but I try to get my records at brick-and-mortar record stores whenever possible.

But I've been listening to that new Ex Hex record, and holy shit. This band continues to put out amazing stuff. They took a step backwards on this release, in a good way. Their first record was a late 70s-era power pop record, you know, before skinny ties came in and the genre got lumped in with New Wave. It was no surprise that the first time I saw them they did two covers: a Real Kids song, and one by The Sweet.
This new record is also very 70s sounding, but more classic rock. Not quite the "arena rock" of Zeppelin or The Who, in fact I'm still trying to put my finger on just how to describe the sound or who to compare them to. But it's an amazing record. Highly recommended.

I'm rather fond of The Brilliant Green, especially "The Angel Song."

Any fans of Love Psychedelico? When I lived in Japan back in 2002-2004, they were pretty popular...and you've gotta love a band that has the audacity to name their first album The Greatest Hits. The first four tracks on that album are stellar, but I'm particularly taken with "I Mean Love Me":

https://open.spotify.com/track/12IQpZOtuVDES4t2d3D4Py

And to keep this post on topic, I picked up a few CDs at a store closing today:

George Benson - Breezin'
Foreigner - Double Vision
Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
Prince - 1999 (to replace the beat-up copy I bought 25 years ago)

Original SST release, and just $12. Had to do it.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2876d25181.jpg
Been listening to some 80s podcasts, and heard this band. Really dug it, and it was just $4.99.

And finally...

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...5cbaf184ea.jpg

Where do I start with this? (and I haven't even listened to side 2 yet!)

For one thing, I'd been hearing about the record, that it had a more "synth pop" sound than Guppy. As a guitar lover, this worried me. But my worries were unfounded, as there's still plenty of guitar on this record (although I'm curious as to how they'll recreate the synth sound live), but more importantly I feel this sound suits Eva's voice much better. I like her voice, but it is shrill and I find that Guppy can be exhausting on the ears if you listen to the entire thing. While I've not listened to all of Young Enough yet, I feel that that won't be a problem.

"Blown to Bits" may be one of the best Side 1 Track 1s I've ever head. It starts out simple but builds to an amazing conclusion. Rather than make you want to just stop the record there (like a lot of the "best" Side 1 Track 1s do), you want to hear what's to come.
"Under You" might have overtaken "Westermarck" as my favorite Charly Bliss song, and it had BETTER be in their live set!

Can't wait to listen to side 2, but I'm just trying to take in side 1 completely first.

Young Enough and It's Real (by Ex Hex) will be fighting for my #1 record of 2019, and I doubt anything else will even come close. These two records ARE my top ten, I don't even need 8 more.

I had only bought a single album up to this week, Dream Theater's Distance Over Time. Then I decided to splurge and buy a few new ones:

Tesla - Shock
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Mettavolution
Queensryche - the Verdict
Sammy Hagar & the Circle - Space Between
Clutch -Book of Bad Decisions
Kenny Wayne Shepherd - The Traveler (pre-order for next week)

Went old school and bought CDs. Four came today, one's on the way and then KWS next week.
Now I just need to listen to them.
