Weezer - The Black Album (finally) - 2019

After talking about it for years, Weezer announced that the Black Album will *finally* be released in 2019 and dropped the first single today:

My expectations were super low for the song - what with the cringy title and it following the pretty bad "California Snow" - but I kinda sorta like it. More so for the music than Rivers' lyrics. At the very least we get a break from their mentions of summer, the beach, and California.

Also they're touring with the Pixies again next spring:

March 8th - Louisville, KY @ KFC Yum! Center

March 10th - Columbia, SC @ Colonial Life Arena

March 13th - Montreal, QC @ Bell Centre

March 14th - Albany, NY @ Times Union Center

March 16th - Mashantucket, CT @ Foxwoods Resort Casino - Grand Theater

March 17th - Baltimore, MD @ Royal Farms Arena

March 19th - Columbus, OH @ Schottenstein Center

March 20th - Grand Rapids, MI @ Van Andel Arena

March 22nd - Memphis, TN @ FedEx Forum

March 24th - St. Louis, MO @ Enterprise Center

March 26th - Kansas City, MO @ Sprint Center

March 27th - Tulsa, OK @ BOK Center

March 28th - Des Moines, IA @ Wells Fargo Arena

March 30th - Saint Paul, MN @ Xcel Energy Center

March 31st - Madison, WI @ Alliant Energy Center - Veterans Memorial Coliseum

April 5th - Nampa, ID @ Ford Idaho Center Arena

April 6th - Portland, OR @ Moda Center

April 7th - Vancouver, BC @ Rogers Arena

April 9th - Sacramento, CA @ Golden 1 Center

April 10th - Oakland, CA @ Oracle Arena

April 12th - Las Vegas, NV @ Mandalay Bay Events Center

They need to stop. I thought that Can't Stop the Hustle was bad, but I couldn't make myself finish Zombie Bastards. I think that Everything Will Be Alright in the End being decent was a fluke, because White was just okay and Pacific Daydream was bland and kind of boring.

They seem to get progressively weirder with each album they release. I really used to like their music, but I feel like Rivers tries too hard to make attempts at being hip/edgy even though it’s basically a facade (I think he tries to do it somewhat ironically but it still doesn’t usually work) and I think most people realize that’s the case. They’ve had flashes of greatness, but I still really feel like their last good album was their self-titled Red Album.

Agreed with everything here.

Rivers:

What I’ve been working on the last two weeks is back to big guitars. Blue Album-ish, but a little more riffy. The working title is Van Weezer. The inspiration came from our live shows, where, in the middle of “Beverly Hills,” unlike on the album, everything stops and I just break out with this crazy guitar solo. We noticed that, recently, the crowd just goes crazy when I do that. So it feels like maybe the audience is ready for some shredding again.

Van Weezer is in mortal combat with Okay Human, a record that’s mostly done. That one’s totally different. It’s inspired by an album from 1970 called Nilsson Sings Newman. It’s all piano-based, but it has a ton of orchestration. We just did the strings at Abbey Road. It’s just gorgeous melodies and extremely eccentric lyrics.

The Black Album is out on Friday.

White and Everything Will Be Alright In The End are much better than Red, if you ask me.

To me The Red Album is good because it’s got a number of stand out tracks. I can remember and like most of what’s on that album. I truthfully couldn’t even name a single track from either The White Album or Everything Will Be Alright In The End. Neither of those two albums caught on with me much for whatever reason.

 No.

Every time I think they can't outdo themselves with a worse album, they prove me wrong. This is dog shit. Such pedestrian, middle school like lyrics. "Have a nice life. Have some more Sprite." WTF. rotfl It is abundantly clear they are just throwing out lowest common denominator crap that they can license to be used in movies, TV shows, commercials, and background music at Old Navy to pad their retirement fund. They are just such a parody now. I fully expect them to announce a fucking tour with Toto at this point.

They are playing The Garden in two weeks. They are a lot of tickets left. I was considering getting something cheap the day of... mostly because they are playing with The Pixies and TV On The Radio (who I haven't seen in years). I'm very much reconsidering that now. They were one of my favorite all time bands who I've seen countless times so I'm all like "I can't quit you". But they sure make it hard...

The Red Album is leaps and bounds better than White and EWBAITE. Thought EWBAITE is not too bad of an album.

I got the email with my download code for this but haven’t gotten around to downloading it yet. Hopefully it’s decent at least. I’ve come to not expect a whole lot from Weezer for a while. The last album of theirs that I enjoyed quite a bit is probably Hurley.

This album ranks waaaay behind Prince, Metallica, Jay Z, and The Damned.

Was Pacific Daydream any good? I put off buying it when it came out and wound up forgetting about it. Still need to grab it someday to complete my collection.

Not their best album but not horrible either. Weezer has always had some goofy lyrics and this isn’t a lot different. Seems like their self-titled albums seem to be some of their better ones if you ask me.

The album is just as terrible as you expect it to be. It's like they keep telling a joke that stopped being funny back in 2006. It's somehow worse than Pacific Daydream.
