Paul McCartney: Egypt Station- September 7th 2018

First new album from Paul in five years. I enjoy his solo stuff and will be picking this up.

Paul McCartney Announces Egypt Station, First New Album in 5 Years

Listen to his new tracks “I Don’t Know” and “Come on to Me”

Paul McCartney has announced his first new album in five years. Egypt Station is out September 7 via Capitol. The announcement arrives with Macca’s new double A-side single. Listen to “I Don’t Know” and “Come on to Me” below. Scroll down for the Egypt Station cover art.

In a press release, McCartney said, “I liked the words ‘Egypt Station.’ It reminded me of the ‘album’ albums we used to make.” He continued, “Egypt Station starts off at the station on the first song and then each song is like a different station. So it gave us some idea to base all the songs around that. I think of it as a dream location that the music emanates from.”

Egypt Station follows Macca’s 2013 LP NEW. Since then, he’s worked with Kanye West on multiple tracks: “Only One,” “FourFiveSeconds,” and “All Day.” Other artists he worked with include Foo Fighters and Ringo Starr. He’s also reissued a number of records, including Flowers in the Dirt, Tug of War, and Thrillington, among others.

He made music for the video game “Destiny” and released the Pure McCartney compilation. Paul won two Grammys in 2014 (Best Rock Song for “Cut Me Some Slack” and Best Music Film for Paul McCartney’s Live Kisses); he was nominated for two more at the 2016 Grammys (Best Rap Performance and Song for “All Day”).

Outside of music, he played a pirate named Jack in the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and made a cameo in a 2015 episode of “BoJack Horseman.” He also acknowledged the existence of Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” in his #MannequinChallenge video.

Any new McCartney is cause for celebration. The two new songs sound good to my ears. Paul's voice is obviously older and shakier, but the quality is there.

Since Flaming Pie, McCartney has been on a 21 year career upswing. Even with Driving Rain. I hope this album continues the trend.

Yeah, he’s been pretty consistent for a while in terms of album quality. The guy is still impressive for his age and coming from one of the biggest bands of all time. Really glad I saw him live one time when I had the chance. Probably would go to another of his shows if he came close to where I am again. I actually just realized I don’t think I ever picked up New but pretty sure I’ve heard some of it. I liked Chaos and Creation in the Backyard and Memory Almost Full a lot.

New is a very fine album. It's a little schizo based on Paul working with FOUR producers, but the quality holds up. Not quite as good as Chaos and Creation, Memory Almost Full, or Flaming Pie, but better than Driving Rain, and an overall testament to McCartney remaining a legitimate creative force well into the Third Act of his solo musical career.

Target's version has two bonus songs, so if you want the CD, get it there. And I love the packaging to it.

Well dammit, I should have researched more before picking it up. Got mine off of Amazon. Overall pretty good album from what I've listened to so far.

The packaging is cool and unique. Thought it was a bit weird that the inner case that houses the disc was also in shrink wrap.

I need to give it a few more album listens. It is a LOT more cohesive than New, more album-focused. But many of the latter album songs seem to bleed a bit too much into each other. I like it though. Paul's late-career renaissance remains strong.

What about his vocals? They sound really thin to me on first listen.

In this interview with Marc Maron, Paul describes it as a concept album.

Paul's voice has been shaky for a while now. It still mostly holds up but yeah, much of his timber is lost. Of course, he's 76 so it can't be helped.

Yeah, I’m not going to get on him for not sounding as good as he once did. The guy is still pretty damn good for as old as he is.

Never really listened to New but enjoyed this immensely on first listen.

I saw that this is on track to sell around 125K in its first week (which is only two days of sales since music now releases on Fridays). Pretty impressive and nearly double what New debuted with. It sounds like Eminem's Kamikaze will hang on to the number 1 spot for another week, but it's going to be a close race.

Re: Paul McCartney: Egypt Station- September 7th 2018

The album is really growing on me. It's his best album of the decade, but that's really a competition between this one and New. Maybe Kisses on the Bottom if you really want to go down that road.

Best per decade IMO:

70s - Ram (This was BOTR for decades with Ram as a close 2nd, but Ram has really won me over in the last 2 years)
80s - Tug of War
90s - Flaming Pie
00s - Chaos & Creation in the Back Yard
10s - Egypt Station

The guy has had a consistent and productive near-50 years of a solo/Wings career, plus immeasurable side projects and a fairly large catalog of tunes that have never seen the light of day.

I recently listened to the whole extended version of the album and the only song I didn't immediately enjoy was "People Want Peace". That one will be skipped for now on. "Get Started" from the extended version should have booted "Peace" off the standard version of the album.

I agree with the sentiment thus far. Been listening to this the past couple days. Was impressed (surprisingly so) upon first listen and it's been growing on me since then. His voice doesn't bother me. Like with Robert Plant's latest releases, the songs have suited it just fine.

I just heard a snippet of "I don't know."
Damn, that's a beautiful song.

I've never been a fan of the Beatles, as I grew up on '90s Hip-Hop, but this is just a good song.

Is the Target version limited edition, or should it still be in stock?

Thanks Mike86 for starting this thread, and everyone else here. You guys have good taste in music!

Their exclusive version is till in stock at most locations near me. Have you checked those near you? And it's available for shipping.

The two exclusive songs are very good.

Re: Paul McCartney: Egypt Station- September 7th 2018

I got this one on Black Friday. Glad I got the Target version because the last two songs are very interesting. Specially "Nothing for Free" that song along with "Fuck You" stood out to me as McCartney trying to cater to a younger audience and the production is very unlike McCartney (not that there is anything wrong with that)

But anyways I looked it up and both songs were co-written by Ryan Tedder (from One Republic) and apparently he has written and produced songs for U2, Adele, Beyoncé, Maroon 5, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Westlife, Hilary Duff, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Big Time Rush, Camila Cabello, Taylor Swift
which is pretty remarkable
