They have confirmed it was suicide.

The cause of Avicii's death at 28 was suicide, the late artist's family confirmed Thursday.

Tim Bergling, known worldwide as hitmaker Avicii, reportedly left a note upon his April 20 death.

"Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions,” the Bergling family says in a new statement translated from Swedish. "He really struggled with thoughts about meaning, life, happiness. He could not go on any longer."

I hate that. I know people hurt really bad sometimes, I just wish we could get our mental health programs to a place where this doesn’t have to happen.

My condolences to his family.

I don't think it's so much the programs, it's the stigma behind it which keeps people from being more open. You hear so often from family members saying they had no idea and that the victim didn't show signs. Chances are, they didn't speak up due to how others would view them.

This is a bit more puzzling since his family appears to have known he was struggling. I hope they treated those signs as serious and did what they could to help.

Helping suicidal people is also extremely difficult, especially those that repeatedly refuse help or fear being in therapy will hurt their career (secrecy clearances and the like).

I've had a couple friends that have committed suicide over the years, and it was never the stigma nor a surprise. Baker acts, pleading, interventions, etc; you never know what will help or hurt a person more. Thankfully I also know a couple that made it over that part of their life.

Autoerotic? When it’s a young man I’ve got to ask.

Autoerotic suicide? Did you even bother to read before you posted that question? Did you see the word "strangulation" somewhere?

Re: Avicii dead at age 28

Avicii committed suicide with broken glass he used to cut himself ... TMZ has learned.

Multiple sources familiar with the circumstances surrounding the famous DJ's death tell us, he did indeed take his own life ... something his parents alluded to last week.

Our sources say the method of death was a shard of glass that caused massive bleeding. Two sources tell us Avicii broke a bottle and used the glass to inflict the fatal wound. One of the sources says it was a wine bottle.

Two sources tell us the point of injury was Avicii's neck but another strongly denies that, saying it was his wrist. We cannot confirm this, but the sources were privy to specific information about Avicii's death.

As TMZ reported ... the 28-year-old was found dead April 20 in the Middle Eastern country of Oman. He battled alcohol problems for years, and his friends worried those issues would eventually kill him.

Avicii's family released a statement that included the clear message it was suicide ... "He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace."

Jesus...sounds like it wasn't planned and maybe a drunken decision. Makes it even more sad if that's the case. It's possible it wouldn't have happened if he were sober. What an awful way to go...

Re: Avicii dead at age 28

I'm not familiar with his situation in particular, but as someone with one attempt in the past and an adulthood filled with anti-depressants and therapy, exorcising the demons of trauma is not an easy matter. There's both a genetic/chemical component and an environmental component to mental illness and each person's mixture of each is going to be different. I consistently wonder at comments along the lines of people helping if they only knew, but there are levels of existential emptiness and loneliness that can't be helped, or at least not overcome (in my experience).
