I agree with all of the problems, but I disagree with it being an awful format years ago. It was a great way to go portable and also to be able to record. It had it's place in time.

Only the Extended Editions. The theatricals they fit on one disc.

Technically, you can fit an entire movie of any length by adjusting the bitrate, but video/audio quality is going to suffer. Blu-ray is supposed to be about superior quality, so it wouldn't be great to have a Blu-ray with sub-DVD quality.

This review mentions the bitrates used on the EE's:
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/187-of...ay-review.html
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 30 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 6.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4.2 Mbps.
This one shows that, at the bitrates used, the films take up more space than can fit on one Blu-ray:
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...7151301AAEoUkZ
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition [Blu-ray]
Runtime: 228 minutes
Discs: 30.91 GB on BD-50 and 36.32 GB on BD-50
Video: MPEG-4 AVC / 1080p24 / 2.40:1 OAR / avg bit-rate: 29.84 Mbps
Audio: English 6.1-Ch DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz / 24-bit / avg bit-rate: 4717 kbps)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition [Blu-ray]
Runtime: 236 minutes
Discs: 30.75 GB on BD-50 and 37.36 GB on BD-50
Video: MPEG-4 AVC / 1080p24 / 2.40:1 OAR / avg bit-rate: 29.90 Mbps
Audio: English 6.1-Ch DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz / 24-bit / avg bit-rate: 4427 kbps)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Extended Edition [Blu-ray]
Runtime: 263 minutes
Discs: 37.12 GB on BD-50 and 40.27 GB on BD-50
Video: MPEG-4 AVC / 1080p24 / 2.40:1 OAR / avg bit-rate: 30.23 Mbps
Audio: English 6.1-Ch DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz / 24-bit / avg bit-rate: 4474 kbps)
Now they could've gone with a lower bitrate video and lossy audio, but it could've compromised quality. The theatricals have a lot lower bitrate to fit on a single disc:
https://www.hifi-writer.com/he/bdreviews/lotr3.htm

Plus, the extended editions are close to 4 hours each with credits (ROTK even longer). Having a break after ~2 hours to swap discs isn't that big a deal.

No, they sound amazing unless you just listened to pre recorded ones. I've had these since the 80's and when played on my Nakamichi 505RX and running through my Yamaha amps they sound amazing.

A bunch of blank TDK Metal tapes I have sitting on the Nakamichi.

I happened to notice that there were a bunch of these on the shelf that last time I was at Target. I was really confused to see them there.

Saw some of those at Fry's too- that's one thing where an iphone would be more practical, but only assuming you weren't going to preserve the recordings for eternity.

I recorded several dozens of King Biscuit, BBC Live and misc. live simulcasts back in the day. Also MTV concerts by running audio from VCR into receiver. I always used 120min. blank tapes. One problem I noticed as the tapes aged is that the other side would start bleeding through in reverse. It was faint but you could hear it. Although I always kept them rewound the tape began to "bow".

I'll take your word for this. However, note that most people wouldn't want to bother to do this - nor do most people have the money, time, or incentive to get this equipment. And, this doesn't change the fact that all of the cassettes I bought commercially back in the day sounded awful - going along with this, note that commercial cassettes are what most of us had access to & are using as reference points for this sound quality.

Near the end of it's run in the early 90's a few recorded material was available on Chrome tapes. It was a step up but nowhere near the quality of TDK or Maxell Metal tapes.

Wow, this is a real blast from the past - I don't remember Chrome tapes, but do remember Maxell Metal tapes. I saw them being sold at some music stores back in the day - but don't remember ever getting any.

Re: If audio cassettes are making a comeback, where are the new players?

I have an older Technics dual auto reverse tape deck coming from ebay.

I couldn't find anything new that didn't have auto reverse.

I will be using it to archive my most important tapes into my Brennan B2(cd jukebox).

I highly recommend the Brennan B2 .

someone in my neighborhood was tossing some cool looking NEC gear this weekend, I scooped it all up including a Dual NEC Cassette Deck. Hopefully it works!

Re: If audio cassettes are making a comeback, where are the new players?

I went into a local shop that's been around for years. The sign just says, "TV and VCR Repair". I'd been wondering what the fuck he does in this day and age. How he stays in business when a new tv costs less than $100 and there are no more VCR's. Well I didn't learn how he stays in business, but I did learn that he has an epic inventory of cassette decks.

Yeah, I think only a few titles were released on Chrome. I could be wrong but this is one of the few I have in my collection. As for the Metal tapes, you had to have a deck that had the metal option; you can play a metal tape on a regular deck but you wouldn't be able to record on it.

You can play CDs and tapes on this for less than $100

You might have to pay $20 in sales tax if you live in CA

Amazon Amazon

Re: If audio cassettes are making a comeback, where are the new players?

The other day I threw away a bunch of audio cassettes in the garbage since I already have the music on CD/MP3.
I kept my collection in a Air Jordan shoe box and I had a collection of music I recorded from the radio.

I understand the appeal for vinyl but cassettes please.

I would get pissed when I was a kid I got a album on cassette and not vinyl for Christmas.

Maybe if you like talk radio you can tape a show on cassette and listen to it later if people still do that.

But it got sold along with a lot of stuff when I finally dumped most of my tapes around '91.

Do you watch Techmoan on Youtube? He has a number of videos on old cassette tech, including a few tape changers.

Wow- those prices are insane. Cassettes are probably my least favorite audio format, next to 4-track tapes which I can't even play.

You're not wrong.

I love that they make you go to the mall for this too. Gotta get that entire vintage experience.

I checked out the website of that vending machine company... they also sell shirts...

I had that one! I think I paid $25 back in the '90s for it. I should have kept it!

Re: If audio cassettes are making a comeback, where are the new players?

I recently bought a TEAC LP-Cassette to CD recorder and have been burning all of my old mixed tapes to CD - including a few tapes I made in the late 80's. So far only one of almost 50 sounded "warped" and unplayable. The rest sound really good and the playback on CD while listening in the car is really good too.

I've been donating my old mix-tapes to the Salvation Army as I've been going along and wondering if they'll be sold! Altho I bet if any of them do, they'll be used to be taped over! LOL

Yeah I had one of the NIN ones.

The owner of the machine is actually a pretty cool guy. I was up there with the baby mall walking and decided to buy the New Order Substance tape just for fun. I have it on vinyl and CD already. Well it got stuck like a bag of chips might in a normal vending machine. I sent him an email, he refunded me and dropped off the tape at my house. Tape looks mint. Dont have anything to play it on.
