Male artist are more talented overall

I think more is expected of them when it comes to musicianship too. Just compare the highest male sellers to the highest female sellers.

Men:

Elvis is somwhere near the top but his numbers are unknown

1. The Beatles - 403,978,000 (update: Mar 2017

2 Michael Jackson – 323,741,000 (update: Sep 2017)

3 Rolling Stones – 234,825,000(update: Dec 2016)

5 Pink Floyd – 229,426,000 (update: Jun 2017)

6 Led Zepplin – 198,856,000 (update: Aug 2016)

7 U2– 192,494,000 (update: Aug 2016)
8 Bruce Springsteen – 157,024,000 (update: Jul 2017)

9 Bee Gees – 156,874,000 (update: Apr 2017)

10 Eminem – 147,086,000 (update: Aug 2016)

Women:

1. Madonna - 241,135,000 (update: Aug 2017)

2. Celine Dion – 192,088,000 (update: Sep 2016)

3. Mariah Carey - 164,642,000 (update: Apr 2017)

4. Whitney Houston – 151,693,000 (update: May 2017)

5. Britney Spears – 99,833,000 (update: Jun 2017)

6. Shania Twain - 79,944,000 (update: Dec 2017)

7. Janet Jackson – 77,131,000 (update: Apr 2017)

8. Adele - 72,937,000 (update: Jul 2016)

9. Cher – 72,435,000 (update: Aug 2017)

Re: Male artist are more talented overall

I just realized there's more diversity on the male list. Men are mainly Rock but have some Pop, Disco, Hip Hop and R&B thrown in. Women are Pop with a dash of R&B and watered down country

Re: Male artist are more talented overall

Success does not equal talent or musicanship. Joni Mitchell, Darlene Love and Ella Fitzgerald, amongst countless others, leave that entire list of women behind in the dust in terms of "talent."

Also, are the numbers given adjusted for inflation? I have trouble believing that, if adjusted, Sinatra or Crosby don't leave Eminem or the Bee Gees in the dust.

Vocally, I don't think Ella Fitzgerald of Darlene Love leaves Whitney in the dust

Re: Male artist are more talented overall

I'd say that Whitney Houston is a more talented singer than Pink Floyd. But Pink Floyd is a better guitarist.

And Mr. Zepplin (sic) is a better singer than Whitney IMO.

What I find interesting is that the male list contains really great artists. Innovators, experimenters, and people who gather global acclaim. While the female list contains mostly retched, dreadful commercial slop that mostly plays to niche audiences of teenage girls and stunted middle agers. Celine Dion? Mariah Carey? Britney Spears? The male list has the Beatles and Pink Floyd.

By the way, the men's list doesn't have a number 4.

Re: Male artist are more talented overall

How do album sales correlate with musical talent?

Spoiler - they don't.
