Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

Quote:
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the nominees for its class of 2018. They include Radiohead, Rage Against The Machine, Kate Bush, Nina Simone, Depeche Mode, and Judas Priest.

Other finalists include Bon Jovi, The Cars, Eurythmics, Dire Straits, J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, MC5, The Meters, The Moody Blues, The Zombies, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Link Wray.

The top five vote-getters, as determined by a group of artists, historians, and music industry members, as well as a fan vote, will be announced in December. They will then be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony held in April 2017 at the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio. HBO will broadcast the ceremony later in the year.

The Hall of Fame will once again honor specific members of each band as opposed to the full lineup, a policy that was first introduced last year. As such, Depeche Mode’s current lineup of Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher is listed along with former members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder. Representing Judas Priest are frontman Rob Halford, bassist Ian Hill, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, and drummers Scott Travis, Les Binks and Dave Holland. Dire Straits’ eligible lineup is made up of frontman Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, drummer Pick Withers, guitarist David Knopfler, and keyboardists Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher.

In order for an artist to be eligible for the Hall of Fame, their first recording must have been released at least 25 years ago or earlier. Radiohead, Rage, Bush, Simone, Judas Priest, Eurythmics, and Dire Straits are all appearing on the ballot for the ballot for the first time, with Radiohead and Rage doing so in their first year of eligibility.

Last year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class included Pearl Jam, Tupac, Journey, Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, and Yes.

The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame has really outlived it's usefulness.

One thing I still like about these nominations is that they include important old people whom I've never heard of. Wikipedia has a good entry on Sister Rosetta Tharp.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

Ah, the annual bitchfest about the R&RHOF...autumn has officially arrived!

Seriously, though, that's a pretty darn good list of nominees.

My personal picks:

Radiohead
RATM
The Cars
LL Cool J
MC5

Of course as always, The Damned are nowhere to be found.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

I'd say that Iron Maiden is more deserving than Priest, but Priest came first, so that's OK.

My picks...

Judas Priest
Depeche Mode (hate them myself, but they are definitely deserving)
Dire Straits
The Cars
and maybe Rufus featuring Chaka Khan (maybe)

Rage certainly belongs in, but considering how many years much more deserving bands had to wait - decades in some cases - I don't think they should get in this year.

No Emerson Lake and Palmer and No Three Dog Night?

I would think it's about time for The Moody Blues.

J Jiles died back in April. Saw Peter Wolfe open for Tom Petty back in July. Dude can still move like a teenager, I was surprised to find out Peter Wolf is now 71. Was more surprised to find out J. Giles lived the next town over from me for a long time. I'd say they are worthy of a nod.... I'm wondering if his passing has anything to do with them being nominated this year...

Radiohead are the only sure bets off that list. Priest could go either way but they deserve to be in. If they do that makes Maiden's chances a little better.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

Per usual, I don't bitch when bands I like continue to be ignored, and I don't cheer when they are inducted. But if I had to play along with my top 5 nominees of who I think *should* be in:

Radiohead
Judas Priest
Nina Simone
Depeche Mode
Rage Against The Machine

Probably in that order.

Dire Straits might get in based on the sheer number of lame white guys in headbands roaming the cosmos...

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

I'm actually a bit surprised Bon Jovi isn't already in to be honest. Maybe not the greatest of the nominees but a pretty iconic band in my opinion and they've had a ton of hits and decent albums throughout the years.

Not really a big fan of the other front runners personally. Never liked Radiohead and while I think Rage is a good band I'm not sure I'd consider them hall of fame worthy personally.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

Random thoughts.

The Cars: I read in Keyboard magazine years ago that Greg Hawkes was enormously influential in his synth programming. He didn't use any off-the-shelf sounds: he designed them all.
Kate Bush: I like her, but she wasn't a big seller and she walked her own path that didn't influence anyone.
Dire Straits: A whole generation of guitarists wanted to sound like that. Sold lots of albums.
Judas Priest: I don't know anything about them. Are they one of those bands that sound great when your 15, but kind of embarrassing when you're 30? Or do they still sound great to middle-aged ears?
Moody Blues: These are one of the fathers of art rock. Creative and big-selling.
The Zombies: Did a couple great singles. But they don't belong.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

I would hate it if Depeche Mode got in before The Cure, The Smiths and New Order. All three of those post-punk bands were way more artistic and influential. In my book, Mode had one great song (Just Can't Get Enough) and a shit-ton of boring mechanical droning over an affected British accent.
Give me any single by The Cure any day of the week!

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 nominees

it's probably going to end up being

Radiohead
Depeche Mode
LL Cool J
Dire Straits
Nina Simone

With the fan vote being either Bon Jovi, Priest, or Moody Blues, depending on which fan base is more motivated.

My personal selection would be
Judas Priest
Moody Blues
Dire Straits
The Cars
Bon Jovi
And I can't even pick a sixth.

I know Eurythmics were huge in the early 80's and the Sweet Dreams video is instantly recognizable worldwide, but were they really that big overall?

Fan vote? The fans get to vote in a member?
