I threw the Wildflowers disc into my Playback box set just to round it out for me. Great record. Not a huge fan of Mojo or Hypnotic Eye so that's sort of the end of the Petty era for me. Great set though.

Through ecstasy, crystal meth, and glue
I've found no drug compares to you
All these pills
All this weed
I don't know just what I need

He will be missed.

Ive been a huge fan of TPHB for decades. I would say he is my favorite artist by far and I am just at a loss. He truly enjoyed what he did, he had an ear to ear grin coming on stage in Boston back in July and just seemed happy. Ive seen him countless times since 87 and actually considered flying out to LA for the last shows a few weeks ago as this was set to be his last major tour. Never would have thought he would be gone so soon.... RIP.

I love Petty, but I have to mention one of his worst missteps, mostly because my buddy and I love to joke about.

During the 1992 Los Angeles riots he hurriedly recorded a song that was a call for peace and a fund raiser for relief. Cheers to his good intentions, but it is one of the most slapped together, half assed tunes ever concievied.

Yeah I agree. We need peace in LA!

Doesn't damage his legacy a bit though. He had a higher batting average than nearly anyone in the business.

Down here on E Street, we’re devastated and heartbroken over the death of Tom Petty. Our hearts go out to his family and bandmates. I’ve always felt a deep kinship with his music. A great songwriter and performer, whenever we saw each other, it was like running into a long lost brother. Our world will be a sadder place without him. - Bruce Springsteen

That tour was the one and only time I saw him. Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

First became aware of him while driving from KC to San Antonio in Jan. 1978. Once I got out of KC radio range I picked up other stations that played 'Breakdown' a lot. Every time I hear the song I think of that road trip.

The first few years I wasn't that big on him. Thought his stuff was ok, but I could take it or leave it. Then I heard 'Woman in Love'. Ran out and bought Hard Promises just for that song. Still wasn't that impressed with rest of album.
When Long After Dark was released the local FM station played the entire album on Midnight Album Hour. I thought it was awesome. Bought it and played it over and over. Suddenly the older albums became awesome also. I was a convert. Bought everything he released after that.

Same here. I like the songs if they pop up somewhere, and some in particular bring back strong memories of high school due to MTV.

I like reading these stories, even for people I don't have a big interest in.

we can for sure expect the "bonus content" from Wildflowers (All the Rest) and I was just reading on another site that Mudcrutch 2 had 9 tracks left over so we may get another album from that project. It wouldn't be hard for the other members of mudcrutch to add a track or two (no telling how many tracks were recorded with Tom singing lead.) but its not hard to imagine at least one tribute song/track added to make a 10 song LP for Mudcrutch.

Its a shame as he was such an amazing song writer and showman... For sure there wont be another artist like Tom for me.

"Tom Petty was declared dead, then alive, then dead again. That makes sense because you can stand him up at the gates of hell, but he won’t back down."

Sounds like he was trying to cash in on a serious social issue.

LOL As clumsy as it was, it was a call for peace. If you know anything about Petty you know he put integrity way before commercialism and never tried to "cash in". Find another forum to troll.

TMZ, never reported his death, and that is one reason why I questioned all the early reports. TMZ is more accurate than many "real" news outlets (CBS in this case).

It's also very typical for artists to donate any money made off these benefit songs.

Giving Wildflowers a listen today. He was such a consistently excellent songwriter. Virtually every track on this album could have been a hit.

Count me in as someone who loved Hypnotic Eye as well. A rock solid album and better than most artists could do at his age.

Yes, that's true, Volume 3. I own the CD, but was not aware, though I should have been, that Orbison was not part of it. Vol. 3 is not of nearly the same calibre as Vol. 1, with "If You Belonged to Me" being the standout.
Petty was one of the greats. I love the Wilbury's stuff. I love the stuff with the Heartbreakers. I love the solo stuff. My favorites are probably American Girl, Even the Losers, Yer So Bad, and Don't Come Around Here No More.
Good selection of favs, though I don't really dig "Yer So Bad". To my mind, Petty had 4 masterpieces: "American Girl" (great concluding song on a terrible debut album); "Don't Come Around Here No More"; "Free Fallin'" (overplayed, but superb nonetheless); and the unheralded powerhouse anthem "All the Wrong Reasons" from Into the Great Wide Open:

Younger days:

Two of the all-time greats together. I think I like Seger's overall oeuvre a bit more than Petty's. Firstly, Seger has a far better voice than Petty did, but is also more of a rocker, though I have no appreciation for the hard rock of his early years (Brand New Morning is the only one of his first seven albums that I find palatable).

I have everything by Petty except the live albums and his last two platters, which I found increasingly weak. Thanks for the mention of Playback. I've never heard of it. How many of the songs are outtakes or previously unreleased?

I believe, at the time, it was little less than half of the six CD's full of material.

But since then I thinks some of the songs have been included in other releases. Like the Damn the Torpedoes deluxe edition as an example.

The first three discs are an overview of all the MCA albums. Around 1/3 to 1/2 of each album.
Disc four is all non-LP B sides
Discs 5 and 6 are misc. stuff. Demos, unreleased tracks, a few live tracks.

At the time it was the only way to get tracks like "Ways to Be Wicked", original "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".
The set was best known for the song "Waiting For Tonight" which was recorded for Full Moon Fever but not used. Features The Bangles on background vocals. FM stations began playing the song people were buying the box set to get the song. I believe it has since been added to some best of compilations.

The Live Anthology box set is great. Never cared for Pack Up The Plantation, but the Anthology is the live stuff you dream of. I'd like to have the Live at Fenway Park on CD.
