Could One Direction be one of the most successful boy bands ever?

Maybe the Beatles in the early 60's but I don't really consider them a boy band.

I know most of us here including me don't really like that type of music but it seems like each of these guys has a successful solo career.

Being objective you could not say the same about N'Sync where Timberlake is the only guy still around.

Maybe they have good agents?

Each of these guys has or had songs that are currently in the billboard top 100 and could be around for a couple of years.

Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Nial Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson are the guys in the band.

I don't think I've ever heard a One Direction song, at least not willingly. And if I did (radio etc) I wouldn't have recognize them I'm sure.

Well, I hate to admit it, but this song is pretty damn catchy :

And I also had no idea what One Direction was. But after a quick Google search, my kids aren't old enough so that's probably why I haven't been exposed yet :)

The carrot top guy is probably the most popular and talented guy in the group.

MTV Live can't stop playing this video.

If we're talking about earnings in $$$ I bet *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys earned more. They were bigger at a time when album sales actually earned you money. And their tours were routinely #1 and they toured stadiums.

Maybe but I can't think of that many bands where every band member might have a successful or decent solo career.

Also, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant formed the group Heads of State in 2008.

(More generally).

Wonder how much cash the members of NSYNC and Backstreet Boys would have today, if it wasn't being siphoned off by Lou Pearlman back in the day.

They have been very successful, but they aren't in the same league as The Jackson 5. Michael is the only one that had a successful solo career. But I mean, his solo career is second to only Elvis in the last 55 years.

The only other post-boyband successful solo career that I can think of offhand, would be Ricky Martin many years after Menudo. Though definitely not on the scale of a Michael Jackson.

Back in the late-1990s, Ricky Martin was one of the few then-current pop stars I was listening to.

Their music as a group never really hit the high highs of previous "inescapable" boy bands, and I'm not sure how them each having solo careers really does much to justify them together as a group. *shrug*

Guess you'll have to wait and see in a few years if they're still churning stuff out.

They're also one of the shortest lived "big" Boy Bands though at only 6 years and their album sales are a bit low compared to their competitors (they're slightly behind Westlife, one I have legitimately never heard of), though admittingly the landscape changed quite a bit for this iteration.
