RIP Chuck Berry

Dead at age 90. Probably every piece of popular music for the last 60 years owes its inspiration, directly or indirectly, to Chuck Berry. Truly one of the all-time greats.

It's on efukt.

He's in Heaven now, putting peepholes and cameras in all of the women's toilets.

That's how he rolled.

Didn't Angus Young jack his duck walk from, Berry?

I think you mean Marty McFly.

And yeah, Berry was an all-timer.
From the original Rock & Roll HoF charter class, only Don Every, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard remain with us now.

Edit : Nope, Fats Domino as well. Who knew?

Wow, surprising. Especially since I thought he died about 20 years ago.

Re: RIP Chuck Berry

Chuck was supposed to record a new album this year. His first since 1979.

I knew he waited too long - not that it was likely to be a classic, but it would have been cool to hear something new from him about 10-15 years ago.

There is no doubt, though, that Chuck defined Rock and Roll, and his music really had one of the biggest impacts on popular music of any artist in the 20th Century.

Re: RIP Chuck Berry

Now I'm reading that maybe the new album was already recorded. If so, that will be interesting to hear. What did Chuck have left in the tank, musically, at 90?

He was the original Rock and Roll guitar hero, and he influenced every Rock guitar player and songwriter that followed him, whether directly or indirectly.

Re: RIP Chuck Berry

Pathetic that the mainstream media covered George Michael's death for 3 days and covered Chuck's for about half an hour. Pretty good indication of our myopic view of history.

I don't disagree but I don't think it's an indication of musical legacy, but rather, an indication of one being expected and one not. Like my 7th grade social studies teacher told me, the news doesn't need to report the tens of thousands of planes that landed safely this year--they report the one that crashed--they report what's out of the ordinary and what is not supposed to happen.

It is much more out of the ordinary (ie newsworthy) for a 53 year old to die than a 90 year old.

Maybe some people in St. Louis know more but didn't he have a regular gig at Blueberry Hill?

Yep. And more. And he'd tell you that too. AC/DC used to cover Chuck Berry songs in the early days.

Yes, he used to play there once a month. I saw him about 4-5 years ago. He wasn't in great shape (sometimes playing in a different key than the band), but it was still cool to see a living legend in such small confines.
