Depeche Mode announce new album, world tour & Nos Alive headline set The synth-pop heroes return with 'Spirit' Andrew Trendell, 11th October 2016 Depeche Mode have announced details of their new album 'Spirit' - along with a world tour, a headline set at Nos Alive festival and a show at London Stadium. Next Spring, the synth-pop heroes will release their 14th studio album and the follow-up to 2013's 'Delta Machine' in early Spring. Announcing the record and tour at a livestreamed event from Milan, the band revealed that it was an 'incredible sounding recording' produced by James Ford. "We’re exceptionally proud of Spirit’s sound and energy, and we’re excited to get back on tour to share it with our fans around the world," said frontman Dave Gahan. As well as adding that they'll be working with legendary photographer and director Anton Corbijn on the visuals for the album and tour, they'll be hitting the road to take in 32 shows in 21 countries throughout the year. Among the shows, they'll be headlining one of Europe's finest festivals at Portugal's Nos Alive - topping the bill on the closing day of Saturday 8 July. The rest of the line-up is yet to be announced, but Nos Alive 2016 saw incredible performances from the likes of Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Pixies, Chemical Brothers, Biffy Clyro, Robert Plant, Wolf Alice and many more. Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
They will be adding North American dates for Summer 2017.
I will most definitely be checking out a show. |
Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
I was disappointed with Delta Machine (only studio album of theirs I haven't purchased) so I am hoping this one is better. Depending on the venue and timing I could end seeing them again. They always seem to include the Seattle area on their tours. Haven't seen them since the Singles 98 tour.

Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
Saw them in 1988, still remember how painfully loud it was- reason I haven't been to many concerts since then. But I'll buy a concert BD if they put one out. Looking forward to their upcoming "Greatest Hits" DVD too.

I love this guys. But they have truly lost their mojo in the studio. And it's been gone for well over a decade.

Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
"Always" the bonus song on Delta Machine was better that all of the stuff on the album.
Just hope it is better and not as boring as Exciter. |
Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
I have a friend who has ties with the band, and he sent this to me:
I've heard the new album in its entirety. As a whole, it sucks. Most of the songs lack even choruses. Most do not have any synth chords even. It's very reminiscence of Delta Machine. The only highlights for me were the 2 tracks that Martin sings. Here's some of the track listings: Poorman Move Poisoned Heart Revolution (this will be the first single) Backwards Worst Crime Fail (Martin on lead vocals) Scum So Much Love Eternity (Martin on lead vocals) I thought having a new Producer, James Ford, would help, but he's no better than Ben Hillier. {sigh} but I'm not surprised. I gave up after Playing The Angel. Here's what most people don't realize and you can quote me on this because I have talked to Mr Wilder himself....People say, "Oh but Ultra and Exciter were decent and that was after Alan left." Any musician knows that at any given time, they(in this case Martin) has a good 20+ song ideas in his head from the past decade or more. He had these ideas for songs that never yet materialized but stayed in his head. Martin and Alan had already worked on song ideas past SOFAD, before Alan left. Martin had already given him some demos of songs (that ended up on Ultra specifically) that Alan already gave his feedback on. That's why Ultra still sounds decent because it still had Alan's influences on it. Same goes for Exciter to a lesser degree. I asked Alan why does It's No Good sound like it could've been a b-side to Enjoy The Silence or Policy of Truth and he smiled, and simply replied "It could have been." |
Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
I thought Sounds of the Universe was better than Ultra, about on par with Exciter. I don't have high hopes for this one though.

Any word on US dates?

Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
Wow, those songs on that clip sounds like horse shit. They're claiming "this is a follow up to Delta Machine"!?! They should try and distance themselves from that steaming pile as far and as fast as they can. I haven't listened all the way through one single song on Delta. It's the only Depeche album I despise more than Exciter. The lyrics on Delta are especially comical, "I come to your house and break down the door" wtf is that? They've lost the struggle that once made them great. I swear that sunny Santa Barbara weather has made Gore's brain mush. Not only that , but they are nothing without Alan Wilder... I mean, they are something, a live act that can no longer produce a hit record.
And, since a Wilder reunion is out of the question they really should step outside the box and hook up with someone like Trent Reznor, for god sake do something! Gore's ego has gotten in the way of the bands ability to make great music that we once expected - he might pen a good lyric (past tense), but he absolutely blows ass in comparison to Wilder when it comes to building/engineering a great sounding song. Gore probably thinks he's as good if not better than Wilder in that department too. Before people crap on the Reznor idea, listen, music sales for both Depeche and NIN will never ever get to levels that they once both knew. So, instead of just churning out the same bullshit why not mix it up, literally. Granted, Reznor is more of an "artist" much like Wilder in my opinion so that "artist" ego might get in the way of Trent wanting to stoop to Depeche's level and visa versa. He doesn't need them, but Depeche needs somebody. Love or hate NIN, Reznor can compose, and Gore can't, Gahan can't, and Fletcher is a glorified button pusher just lucky to be in the band. Without a collaboration with a guy like Reznor, Depeche will just continue to trudge along churning out uninspired crap every couple of years. Also, can we ditch the live drums. Hit the reset button and take it back old school synth! I would love to see Depeche do a tour where they play the entire Music for the Masses or Violator albums much like U2 is doing for The Joshua Tree. But sans the live drummer of course. |
Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
I have everything up through Violator, and then I kind of lost interest. The only album since then that really grabbed me and that I love beginning to end is Playing the Angel.
I haven't seen them live since the Violator tour--I'd be up for checking them out again. |

Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
Didn't Wilder choose to leave? Does he even want to come back?
|
Re: Depeche Mode - Spirit and World Tour - Spring 2017
That's a shame. I've always had Ultra as that gem that is really firing on all cylinders. After Exciter DM just sounds like noise (which adding the overrated Reznor to would just be horrible) There are some good songs after Exciter but they would hardly fill a whole album.
I wish Wilder would just rejoin. Hed make a shit load of money. Itd be like Iron Maiden!! lol |
