"But as far as Kirk… Kirk was not present in the studio. He was dealing with life. He had a lot of life things going on for himself, which he'll choose to talk about if he wants.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16

I've been kind of broke the last few months, so I was waiting until I had some money for the Deluxe Vinyl set of Hardwired before I really dug my teeth into the whole record. I loved it. I don't think its on par with the first 4, but I think I dig it just as much as the Black Album, which I always considered their last great album.. I don't hear these so called terrible Kirk solo's, they didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, but I thought they all got the job done and served the songs well. Had they kept the album a little tighter, with maybe the best 8 songs like the old days, I think the album would be flawless.

One thing I will say though, listening to the live tracks on the bonus disc, man is James voice SHOT. Okay so this isn't exactly breaking news, but the fact that of all the live shows they play, they decided THESE were the best Metallica had to offer is worrisome.

Metallica doesn't really have anyone in front of them to say, well Band X played until they were all 65, so maybe Metallica can. I think now its just a matter of time until either James voice falls off completly or Lars can't play metal drums anymore. They're all about 53/54. I wouldn't be surprised if they have maybe 1 more album in them and maybe 5 years left as a huge touring act. same goes for Slayer/Megadeth/Anthrax etc. I think were gonna find out sooner than later that speed and thrash metal has an expiration date.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16

I've been listening to the old albums for the first time in a while (I know them like the back of my hand though). I realized what I'm missing the most on this new record - guitar harmonies. That was such a signature sound for the band. DM still has a bit but this new record has even less. It's probably why I like Moth Into Flame the most since it does have some.

I made the same observation a little while ago after doing the same thing.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16

Lars Ulrich recently revealed that the massively-praised "Spit Out the Bone" track off Metallica's new album was originally around 10 minutes long.

The drummer tells Rolling Stone about the 7-minute tune: "That was just an adventure, man. I have versions of that song that are two to three minutes longer.

"We just kept going and going and going. That was also the first song where we went, 'Wait a minute, is there too much of a good thing here?' And then we started peeling it back. It was one of those where you just keep going to different universes and different modes and areas because it was super fun.

"It was like this journey. Old-school Mercyful Fate-type stuff was kind of the inspiration for that."

He added: " I think there is definitely more of a New Wave of British Heavy Metal thing on this record. It's just a lot of banging riffs and rockin' kinds of moments, as well as some straighter, simpler drumming. So definitely."

Considering that's easily my favorite track on the album, I'd love to hear the other versions.

Gotta say, the more I listen to this the more I like it. Except for Confusion, ManUNkind and Murder One. Those songs are very much filler material.

setlist regulars like master of puppets, one and creeping death were not played due to chinese government censorship. First public show that hardwired was not played since its premier, presumably for the same reason

Ya know, I guess I just had to go back to their older stuff in full before making that dumb comment about not liking their old stuff.

Master of Puppets is amazing, Ride the lightning is number 2, and kill 'em all was even ahead of its time.

Still not a huge fan of ...And Justice for All but definitely not a bad album.

As part of some Citibank concert series, Metallica is playing the Hollywood Palladium next month after the Grammys.

And my buddy just scored us tickets. I am beyond excited to see Metallica again, especially in such an intimate, venerable venue.

Man. Are there any issues with Kirk that people dont know about? His playing is getting bad.
It sounds OK one moment then it just goes to shit. I know guys like the change shit up when playing live but this is just getting ugly.

Well, if they go through with the Grammy performance then I'd say it's a sure bet this'll go down, too.

It's interesting you say this. I was listening to the live bonus disc on hardwired and I was shocked at how bad the lead playing by Kirk was. I mean, just awful. Hard to believe this is the same guy who just tore the shit out of their early work.
