First CD you ever bought?

I remember when CDs were the hot new thing after cassette tapes. I actually bought my first CD before I even had a player, though I knew I was getting as a present.

So, I remember when watching the movie, how good the music was and how important to the movie. First time I ever noticed, it was ear opening.

And, I have collected and now gave up almost 1,000 CDs.

But, my first was the Backdraft soundtrack. I just loved the entirety of it. The Bruce Hornsby songs and Hans Zimmer’s amazing score. I have since got it digitally of course.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

I don’t remember the first one I bought, but I remember the first few I received. I got my CD player for Christmas and got the below releases.

Kind of an odd assortment but those were my first ones. Still have them all.

From my grandparents.

From my parents.

From my Aunt and Uncle.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin, which I bought back in 1986. CDs cost $25 in Canada back then, plus there weren't a lot of hard rock/metal CDs available at the time, so I wasn't buying them very often until the prices came down and there were more choices.

I'm pretty sure the next few I bought were Alice Cooper - Constrictor, KISS Destroyer, Ace Frehley - Frehley's Comet, Anthrax - Among the Living and Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy. Lost track after that.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

I got my first job during the summer for a week working at a shitty telemarketing firm just long enough to buy a Sony boombox at Best Buy that had a CD player. I pick up the RHCP at the same time. Then I went on a CD buying frenzy replacing all of my cassette tapes with CDs.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

King Tee's Tha Triflin' Album? I think that could be it. I stuck with cassettes longer than I should have and had amassed something like 300 when someone stole them from the trunk of my car. That ended my cassette purchases cold turkey and I instantly switched to CDs. I hope those cassettes found a good home.

I don't remember my absolute first.

In the first batch of cds, I was willing to pay $25 for a japan import of Anthrax "Spreading the Disease" which I purchased as an impulse buy. I was somewhat surprised that a then-local record store would even stock something like this at the time circa late-1986 / early-1987.

Prior to that, I already knew that Japanese imported vinyl records were quite expensive and might have had higher quality. So I was willing to pay slightly more for that japanese Anthrax cd at the time.

Another title in that first batch, was an original Megaforce/Important pressing of Metallica "Kill Em All". Though the mastering was kinda crappy, compared to the later Elektra remasterings.

During that same time period, I wanted to also get the "Ride The Lighting" cd but was never able to find it at the time. If discogs.com is accurate, Megaforce/Important never released "Ride The Lighting" on cd in 1986/1987. It was only released in america on cd by Elektra in 1987. At the time, I was never able to find the 1986 (or 1987) british Music For Nations release of the "Ride The Lightning" cd.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

Another one I now remember from that first batch circa 1987, was Slayer "Reign In Blood".

According to discogs.com, the cd copy I purchased was likely a first pressing where the song "raining blood" fades out at the end. In contrast for later pressings / remasterings, the same "raining blood" track did not fade out at all and was 30+ seconds longer.

The first Reign In Blood CD also has the last couple of minutes of Postmortom start at the beginning of Raining Blood.

At least I'm consistent!

Re: First CD you ever bought?

Got 2 to start my collection:
Bryan Adams - Reckless
Don Henley - Building the Perfect Beast

It must have been 1985. I remember my first CD player was a Sony and it cost $300. Wish I knew how many CDs I have now, probably at least 1000-2000. I need to get one of those bar code scanners to catalog them, I guess.

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
Soundgarden - Superunknown

Re: First CD you ever bought?

My roommate was a CD enthusiast and we had nearly the same taste in music. He would buy them 30 or 40 at at time. I only had to buy CDs that he didn't want. Here are a couple of possibilities:

Marianne Faithful - Broken English
Flash and the Pan - Flash and the Pan

Re: First CD you ever bought?

I believe it was the album Blue by Double, it had the Captain of Her Heart song on it. It would have been used, and I listened to that CD a lot. I sold it during a purge several years back and always regretted. I never see it in the used stores, it must be rare or something.

I bought the Music For Nations CDs of those two albums back in the day. Since they were imports they cost me $30 CDN each but it was worth it to me. They sound pretty good for the era, except that the MFN Lightning had the left/right channels accidentally reversed.

Yep, mine was like that too, it annoyed the hell out of me (no pun intended).

Re: First CD you ever bought?

I started buying LPs in 1971. Can't remember what came first. The very first few I had were
Every Picture Tells A Story
Fragile
School's Out
Layla
Thick As Brick
A Nod Is as Good As A Wink

Never switched to CD until 1998. Bought new car that had CD player. Went into Best Buy to pick up a couple just to try it out. Both were titles I already had on LP. One was Trick of The Tail. Can't remember other. Have since replaced everything with CD and then some.

Re: First CD you ever bought?

Dig That Groove Baby, the debut record of Britain's The Toy Dolls, 91 or 92. Hard to find (at the time) in any format, finally saw it at a used record store but on CD only. I told the clerk I was hesitant since I didn't own a player, he said, "You can go into any Circuit City and buy a CD player. You'll have a hard time finding this album anywhere."

His logic made perfect sense so I bought the disc.

(I now also have two copies on vinyl)

Re: First CD you ever bought?

I was working in the Sears electronics department evenings during HS, probably 1987. Got a good deal on a reconditioned player - wanna say it was like $140 or so. Grabbed a couple of CDs at the same time.

Pretty certain they were Metallica - Kill 'Em All and Pink Floyd - The Wall. And in longboxes.
