LAS VEGAS (AP) — B.B. King, whose scorching guitar licks and heartfelt vocals made him the idol of generations of musicians and fans while earning him the nickname King of the Blues, died late Thursday at home in Las Vegas. He as 89. - For most of a career spanning nearly 70 years, Riley B. King was not only the undisputed king of the blues but a mentor to scores of guitarists, who included Eric Clapton, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall and Keith Richards. He recorded more than 50 albums and toured the world well into his 80s, often performing 250 or more concerts a year. RIP |

I saw him several times. Near the end, he had a wheelchair on the side of the stage to get him there. His playing never suffered though.

I saw him a tad over 20 years ago when he played at my university during my sophomore year in college. It was a great show and he will be missed.

I'm amazed that B.B. worked until I believe roughly last year before his body finally gave out on him.

While it is sad to see him go, he had a long life and a great career. He made a lot of great music that made a lot of people happy. That's not a bad legacy.

I appreciated him as an icon of blues music but I never listened to him that much in all honesty. Still sad to see him go. RIP.

And I totally get why so many people loved his music. He was great at what he did. I just wasn't a big fan of what he did - but I loved that he kept doing it and made so many people happy. And, let's face it, his music was really good for what it was, and it was much, much better than most popular music put out over the last couple of decades. |

I purchased the Indianola Mississippi Seeds album in high school after a neighbor played it for me and later I shared it with a friend of mine who played the guitar. 30-odd years later this friend calls me out of the blue (after having been out of touch for 15-20 years) to say he was playing this album and it was his all-time favorite and it all started when I lent him my copy back in the day.

I am a blues musician and I loved his music dearly. I saw him over 25yrs ago and even then he had difficulty standing through the whole show. He was still amazing though.
Today will be a day for reminiscing, and listening to his many albums and appreciating his great contribution to American music. |

Last saw him at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2006. RIP, loved BB, this really makes me sad. :sad:

One of the greats of American music. As others said, I was never an avid listener of his stuff, but what he did mattered tremendously.

He was tremendous and his mark on popular music reflects that. I just hope that Buddy Guy lives to be 250. |

B.B. was very influential on modern pop and rock music. He worked with many mainstream artists like Eric Clapton, U2, Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker. His audience wasn't limited to folks living on the Mississippi Delta or in the South. I was impressed that he performed until last year when he was 88 when most that old would be restly comfortably in retirement or in a nursing home. |
