+1 to Sufjan Stevens. A friend of mine took me to see him live and I can't remember the last time I was so bored at a live show.

That's a good choice for me, too, except nothing has changed and I still don't like her music at all.

I can understand people not liking The Velvet Underground. They were supremely influential, and I'm sure even people who dislike them can acknowledge that, but they're not exactly easy listening.

Now me, I love them, they're one of my all time favorite bands, but I understand the perspective of people who don't.

I think if you were a fan of punk and new wave in 70s/80s, you "get" the VU more than others.

but after... blech.
Station to Station, Low, Scary Monsters are superb.

That's possible. I got into the VU through Bowie.

I actually left off one of the biggest bands that I've never cared for that most people seem to love: Led Zeppelin. I just don't get their appeal and why so many people praise them and I generally love a lot of the big classic rock bands. I like Stairway to Heaven and the Immigrant Song but those are about all.

Love much of that genre, but still could never get into the VU as others do. Oddly enough I do like a lot of Reed's solo work and own the Essential Lou Reed collection. The few VU songs on there is all I'll ever need.

Re: Bands or Musicians That Almost Everyone Seems to Like... But I Don't

I used to love Led Zeppelin but only like a few songs at this point. I think it was a combination of listening to them too much in high school and then discovering far more interesting music (as well as a lot of the blues music that Zep stole). Interestingly, I never got sick of Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, or The Beatles, even though I also listened to them as much as I did Zeppelin in high school.

I won't ever own any Beatles, some of it is hummable, sure, I know most lyrics, but I don't really care for them.

There was a time that I thought just that. What was the big deal with the Beatles? I liked some of their songs that I had heard, but just didn't get the hype. And then at some point in time many years ago, I just decided to listen to all of their albums in order to "get it" about them. And yeah, their earliest albums were catchy in that early-'60s way, but no more than anyone else's from that time. But I continued to listen and something seemed to change... I started to get hooked. I began to think that maybe these guys were really good, maybe even great. And at some point in time, I was a hardcore Beatles fan. I don't know when and I don't know which song pushed me over, but it happened.

Now, years later, I go on a Beatles kick every now and then, listening to all their music again.
Are they heads and shoulders better than everyone else? No.
But are they better than almost everyone else? Yes.

Pearl Jam. Maybe a bit off their early albums but for the most part, like nails on a chalkboard.

Oasis kicks ass.

I'm largely a metal/hard rock fan, so London Calling simply isn't aggressive enough for me. Which albums are more hard edged?

Their most hard-edged album is their self-titled. But it's not metal, it's punk.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm a big fan of the ramones, the pistols, misfits, etc etc. I like aggressive punk, not raggae, ska and the other crap on London Calling.

Well, The Clash had reggae, ska and other crap on each of their albums in some form, so they may not be your cup of tea.

Yeah, as much as I like Clash, I hate their reggae/ska crap. If they dumped that shit from their Sandinista triple album, it would be one very good album.

And you can buy it twice! The US and UK releases were significantly different, and you really do want all the songs included. The US release has Clash City Rockers, Complete Control, the great cover of I Fought The Law, White Man in Hammersmith Palais (although that's reggae/ska influenced for sure), and a different version of White Riot. UK release gives you Cheat, Protex Blue, and Deny.

Arguing. ARGUING! I can't believe I have to defend the Velvet Underground. Gah! You've brought me to this low state... YOU!

"Sister Ray" is a monolith of 20th century music, often imitated, never equalled. The title track is a classic and Here She Comes now is beautiful.

Moving on, their entire third album is chock full of classics. If you truly think "What Goes On", "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Beginning to See the Light" are 'boring' (just to pick three songs on that album), there's really not much to say. Many bands have built entire careers on just one of those three songs.

You're also totally discounting the extremely famous "Sweet Jane", "Rock and Roll" and (a serious contender for the official Greatest Song ever Recorded) "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"? Seriously, these songs are boring? Everything else on Loaded as well?

Ever the unreleased "VU" is full of great stuff, in particular "Foggy Notion", "I Can't Stand it" and "Lisa Says".

I understand not liking the band (this opinion is wrong, but at least has some basis: opinion), but I simply can't fathom calling VU 'boring'. Perhaps the point is that their influence is so pervasive that people just assume music has always been like that, but that's a cliche to say about this band.

By definition, no opinion is wrong, but you know that, or ought to. Just accept that not everyone has the same stratospheric opinion of V.U. as you do. As I wrote, I greatly enjoy the first album, and the post-W.L./W.H. albums contain a few meritorious songs as well (e.g. "Pale Blue Eyes", "Stephanie Says", "Temptation Inside Your Heart", "I'm Sticking With You"). However, much of the rest is, yes, boring to me. You'll just have to deal with it.
