I think it's digital release was 2013, and it's physical release was 2014.

According to Adams, with this album, it was the first in quite some time where he felt like he made an album that was more himself, rather than trying to fit into someone else's mold of what they thought he should sound like. I'll take the sound of this Ryan Adams over AAF any day of the week.
I'm still a huge fan of his, but I haven't cared for his last few albums at all. I listened to the new one maybe 3 times and kind of threw it in the corner. Ashes & Fire also bored the hell out of me.

Whenever he goes into a more "rock & roll" vein, his stuff turns out really innocuous and just plain boring; he loses any sort of unique distinction he had in his more traditional folk/alt-country records. Saw him last month, and easily the most boring segments were when he played stuff from the new album, everything else was great.
Well, to each their own then. As again, I feel the opposite in regards to his "rock" stuff. Not that I don't like his acoustic work, I do. I can appreciate both.

I still can't recall a single track off of Ashes & Fire, but love "Gimmie Something Good" (even if Benmont Tench's appearance does make it sound like Tom Petty), and tracks like "Trouble", "Am I Safe", amd "Tired Of Giving Up" off the new album are all very memorable. "I Just Might" is probably my favorite cut, though. I also really liked the 1984 7" release.

Nope. 2013 for both. It fell just shy of making my Top 20 last year.

Re: Top 10 Albums of 2014 (Plus 10)

I've seen the albums from War On Drugs, Sun Kil Moon and Warpaint turning on on quite a few folks lists this year. While they didn't make my top 10, all of them are teetering around 11 - 20 on my list. The reason most of them didn't get higher, is that while all are strong-ish releases, they are also all records I have to be in a specific mood to want to listen to. As such, this limits playability for me, and I can't fairly rate them as high as I would other albums I listened to more.

Re: Top 10 Albums of 2014 (Plus 10)

I don't think I can even name ten albums this year I was interested in. I barely bought any new albums this year but enjoyed a couple from this year I did purchase. Those two are Foo Fighters- Sonic Highways and She & Him- Classics. I know that Classics isn't new material and a cover album but I'm still counting it.

I never got around to buying or listening to Jack White- Lazaretto. I still like him but for some reason I couldn't find the interest to pick it up. The only other one that came out this year that I got was Weezer- Everything Will Be Alright In The End which was just so-so.

No love for the flat-out record of the year, Tweedy? Wow.

I believe Ashes and Fire was Adams highest charting record and the song "Lucky Now" was probably one of his most successful singles.

Like the Ryan Adams debate we've been having, personally, the Tweedy record did nothing for me. Which isn't to say it's a bad record, just that there are numerous other albums I'd rather listen to.

And you'd be wrong, unless "was" was the operative word in that sentence. His latest charted higher, and Easy Tiger charted as high as Ashes & Fire did, too.

Seriously, the first two Doves albums are in my top 25 of last decade. Thanks for the heads up.

Tweedy album is epic and needs to be listened to as a whole. It's quite great. (I suppose if you don't dig Wilco at all, you wouldn't be into this?)

By the way, coincidence?

Someone gave me The Doves and Jimi Goodwin records to check out and I never did. I'll get on that as soon as I can.

I love Wilco, but I think the Tweedy album is a bit bloated. It would've been much better if instead of 20 songs, it were a leaner 12, ditching 8 of the more forgettable songs.

By the way, coincidence?

Probably not.
R.Adams does a good amount of B.Adams songs live, and they joke back and forth on Twitter.

I just saw Ryan a few weeks ago in Columbus and he didn't do any B songs. I didn't think much of him as a live performer. The most interesting part of his set was an improv song about one of the exit signs in the venue.

Butch Walker opened, and I thought he was better.

I like Wilco, but some of their albums do nothing for me, either. Again, not that I would consider them bad. I'm just indifferent to them.

By the way, coincidence?

Not at all. Clearly that was intentional. In his own weird way, I think it was him taking the piss out of all the times people have confused the two.

Much like the baseball HoF voters, I'm taking my potential list of 10 and only nominating one.

Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds in Country Music

This is the best album I've heard in years. 'End of the Line' is an absolutely amazing track with some great, great slide work. Whole thing from top to bottom is quality. I've probably listened to it 20-30 times in the last 3 weeks.

There's no way I can do a top ten this year, but if I have to pick just one that stood out for me, it's Familiars by The Antlers. Stand out tracks are Palace and Parade, but the whole thing is great.
