Who's your favorite tortured artist who battled mental illness?
going back 50 years. I'm not including Beethoven and other crazy composers, opera singers and the like. I'm talking rock n roll, pop, folk etc.
List it if I don't mention the person in the poll.

James Taylor should be on your list. He actually spent a short time in a mental health facility before he really made it big.

Matthew Good. It's actually quite interesting to see his output before he was diagnosed as bipolar (up to and including White Light Rock & Roll Review (2004)), and after (from Hospital Music (2007) onward). In between those two albums, he released a "greatest hits and rarities" album called In A Coma. He's one of my favourite Canadian artists, even though I haven't given his last two albums much attention.

Don't see how Ray Davies fits in this list (yes I now he's bipolar but he's always seemed level headed) but he's my favorite.

I think Ozzy was just wasted on drugs but maybe he suffered from depression in the period after Black Sabbath booted him before he paired with Randy Rhoads and became a famous solo artist.

Kurt Cobain might be my favorite artist amongst those listed, but I'm not convinced he battled mental illness in the same way as some of those others -- I think he just battled depression and drug addition and lost.
I picked Brian Wilson because of course he was a genius, but also his battles with mental illnesses were legendary. There's a movie about it coming out this year called Love and Mercy starting Paul Dano and John Cusak playing Wilson at different phases of his life and Paul Giamatti as the infamous Dr Eugene Landry. Amazingly, I can't find a single trailer for the film on the internet though it's finished and getting rave reviews at film festivals.

Couldn't decide between Ian Curtis and Nick Drake. I realized that Joy Division always had a fanbase when they were active and were bound to get more as they were embarking on their first U.S. tour until Curtis killed himself. Nick Drake on the other hand, people didn't give a shit about him until a freaking car commercial in the late 90s. He recorded that beautiful album, Pink Moon, over a forenight and probably didn't sell 10 records. If that's not tortured, I'm not sure what is.
