Half live, some outtakes, some new studio tunes, "Instant Karma's gonna get him if I don't get him first", taking it upon themselves to "steal" Beatles songs back from Charles Manson, the abominable "When Love Comes To Town", the perceived smug, self-satisfied, lecturing air of the band... it was, IMO, their lowest ebb and turned off a lot of fans.
All that was forgotten 3 years later when Mysterious Ways dropped as a single. I think they learned a lot from that period.

Unforgettable Fire is my favorite album of all time--to me it's just so strange, warm, experimental, moody, unclassifiable--I love it.
As far as when U2 lost it, for me, it would have to be the videos for "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Where the Streets Have no Name." "Look, we're modern hippies, yet cooler than them--see how much we appreciate 60s music and the blues? You can tell by the way we dress now! And look, Bono is a big rock star, yet he's still humble enough to kiss a homely black woman on the cheek! And look, now we're playing on a rooftop, and the unwashed multitudes seeking redemption come to adore us!"

I'm not a U2 hater by any means, but the vibe from those two videos just didn't appeal to me---that's about as far as I care to debate it.

I think Rattle and Hum should have been a two disc album. Disc one titled "Rattle" and containing all new studio material, including a some of the stuff left off of Joshua Tree. Disc two titled "Hum" would be a full live album with their actual good live tracks, such as Streets, Bad, With or Without You, etc. if they had done that, I think it would have been very successful.
The album as released sucked. The mix of studio, then live track has no flow. Also, they chose some of the worst live tracks for the album. Suc a missed opportunity.

I'm not a big fan of Rattle And Hum, but I don't consider a regular release, just a novelty. That said, Hawkmoon is one of the best songs in their catalog.

Even the movie doesn't have some of the best footage they got. I like the rough cut of the movie that is out there. More color footage from Tempe. I would kill for a BR set of the four nights they shot (2 in Denver and 2 in Tempe) and ditch all the off stage footage. Just give me the filmed concert stuff.

Well, they put Invisible on the Deluxe version as a hidden track attached to Sleeps Like A Baby Tonight Remix. It is a little different than the version they released back in Feb. (longer intro/outro and middle section)
The two new songs are decent, but one Lucifer's Hands is a re-do of "Return Of The Stingray Guitar" which they did as an instrumental to open some of the 2010 360 shows.
I do like the acoustic versions of the existing songs as well.

Apple reveals download stats for the most deleted U2 album of all time
No one can forget the moment they looked on in their iTunes and saw the U2’s Songs of Innocence show up without warning. Many weren’t happy, and many were upset enough to use Apple’s instructions to delete the album. Apple is now saying that more than 81 million people have “experienced” the album with 26 million people downloading it in its entirety.
According to Billboard, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services said that 26 million iTunes users have downloaded Songs of Innocence since the September 9th release exclusive to Apple’s 500 million global iTunes customers. Cue adds that 81 million Apple customers “experienced” songs.
To do the numbers simply: From the 81 million that came into contact with the Innocence album, and the 26 million that actually downloaded it, 55 million chose not to get the full U2 experience.
“Apple is a tech company fighting to get musicians paid,” U2 claimed in a statement to Billboard. “The idea that they wanted to make a gift to the very people that actually purchase music is both beautiful and poetic, and for that we are very grateful.”
Despite Apple paying $100 million for exclusive rights to give away and stream the U2 album from the September 13th release date until the October 13th free download deadline, the fact that such a large number of users opted out of the free album promotion can’t feel too good for anyone involved.

But 26 million didn't opt out. What is the last album that was heard by 26 million people?

Also many of those 26 million people bought other U2 albums from iTunes. The other albums were in the top 10 for several days.

Plus out of 81 million, "that came in contact" how many didn't understand how to actually download it? Or simply didn't download the whole thing?

I wish Invisible wasn't attached to another track. I think it is the best song on either disc.

I just can't figure out of this is another example of Mother Apple holding our little hands so we don't have to worry our pretty little heads about a single thing, or some sort of accounting trick to offset their taxes by the full retail price of the album for, well, however many iTunes accounts there are.

I didn't realize until I read the liner notes tonight that Paul McGuiness is no longer U2's manager. You have to wonder whether the Apple deal would have gone down the way it did had he still been around.
