Sixto Rodriguez
I recently watched the documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, which I highly recommend, by the way, and came across this guy Rodriguez. He cut a couple of highly acclaimed but commercially disastrous albums in '70 and '71 before disappearing from the music scene. Unbeknownst to him, he became a music god in South Africa, and the documentary goes into that.
Anyway, I rather like his music, which is clearly Dylan-influenced. My fave of his is a song called "Cause" from his second album, Coming from Reality. Another good one is his best-known song, "Sugar Man", from his first album, Cold Fact. An interesting cat, for sure. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/oKFkc19T3Dk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/qyE9vFGKogs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: Sixto Rodriguez
I bought the soundtrack on vinyl. Really nice package.

Re: Sixto Rodriguez
The director of that documentary has already passed away. He sounds closer to Donovan than Dylan in my ears.

Re: Sixto Rodriguez
Yes, sadly Malik Bendjelloul killed himself a few months ago. I agree that Rodriguez doesn't sound much like Dylan (Donovan is a good comparison, though I think I prefer Rodriguez's plaintive whine), but the verbiage is quite similar to Dylan's (e.g., unique, conceal), as are the titles of some of the songs ("______ Blues"). I'm not saying he's an imitator, just that Dylan probably inspired him, like he did so many singer-songwriters.

I watched the documentary a few months ago and listened to his stuff. I like it. Really good documentary and shows how some singers get screwed over royally by the Recording companies.

Re: Sixto Rodriguez
^Yes, in the doc they interviewed the owner of Sussex, who was incensed by the insinuation that he had ripped off Rodriguez, pointing out that Sussex went under a few years later. I don't know, but somebody made off with all that early-'70s South African lucre.
