Intros? Outros? DJs? Forget that (Radio station truncates songs for the greater good)

http://metronews.ca/news/calgary/111...songs-in-half/
Lengthy guitar intros, repeating choruses and incessant DJ chatter are on the chopping block at one Calgary radio station, which aims to be the first in the country to offer two-dozen truncated songs every hour.

90.3 AMP Radio rolled out its bold new strategy Friday, one that aims to appeal to that music lover who incessantly scrolls for that perfect song on their portable music player or that motorist who lives to belt out a single line from their favourite song on their way home from work.

“It’s just a reflection of changing times . . . it’s amazing to watch young people with their iPods listening to 90 seconds of a song then hitting next,” said Steve Jones, vice-president of programming for Newcap Radio, which owns and operates AMP. “Media needs to react to the changing times and the way people are using the content.”

The average song on AMP now runs somewhere from 1:45 to 2:30, Jones said.

Have a listen to the new format for yourself by clicking here and leave an opinion in the comments below.

On Wednesday afternoon, for example, the station played “Maps” by Maroon 5 at 3:04 p.m. , followed it up with “Catch” by Allie X at 3:06 p.m. and rounded things out with Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow” song at 3:08 p.m.

Previously, AMP played a standard dozen songs.

But its shorter offerings haven’t simply trimmed from the front or back end Jones insisted, but rather skillfully shortened through a service offered by Vancouver-based SparkNet Communications called Quickhitz.
I hate the kind of music this station plays, but FUCK this shit. Who actually wants this??

I'm glad I listen to national, taxpayer-funded talk radio like a normal old man.

As if there need to be further proof that terrestrial radio was dying.

I give this experiment six weeks. Maybe two months if no one is listening.

My wife is one of those people, but only when she is in the car by herself. I'm not sure if even she would be cool with a station that ends songs prematurely.

I haven't listened to the radio in over a decade, and I don't rapidly skip songs unless I'm looking for something specific, so this certainly doesn't interest me.

I agree. This practice is certainly doomed to failure just like TV edits of movies and syndicated edits of TV episodes cut down to fit more commercial time.

Huh? I'm I the only one whose heard of "Radio Edits"?

But seriously, it will be like listening to music radio back in 50's and 60's when many songs were no longer than 2min.

Which most people seem to happily watch?

I'm already familiar with many versions of songs cut for time on the radio- remember on one "cool" station that didn't last very long being surprised to hear the VERY end of Prince's "1999", when the other stations cut it off long before that.

The thing I can't stand now is hearing the SAME song played incessantly- I worked at an office that had the same station on and I went nearly homicidal after hearing Adele's "Someone Like You" and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" 100 times a week! Usually if I hear a song I've already heard even once that month, the station gets changed! Radio was another thing I once wanted to work in, which I'm now glad I didn't.

My point exactly. Guess my sarcasm was either too thick or not thick enough.

It's ridiculous to suggest that people will be outraged over this. Now that the attention span is becoming an endangered species and people are becoming millionaire celebrities for their 6-second Vines the market for this sort of thing is going to become essential.

I just wonder if the music industry is prepared for the day that their 30-second chorus-only edit is the same length as the iTunes preview clip. I guess that's when they'll turn to giving away free ad-based song choruses that can be upgraded to full songs for a premium.

If the songs are complete at 2 minutes, that makes sense. To cut out 3 minutes of a 5 minute song, leaving only whatever the DJ thinks is the most popular portion, is ridiculous.

On paper, it makes sense for the people that skip around a lot. In practice, I don't think those same people will approve of the practice.

Re: Intros? Outros? DJs? Forget that (Radio station truncates songs for the greater g

It's not even the DJ making the decision. This station is using a service to truncate the songs, so maybe they decide, "You know, who needs verses anyway? Let's just give 'em 90 seconds of the chorus and move on to the next song."

I don't listen to music on the radio that much anyway, but it's more because even the "alternative" stations are playing the same goddamn songs over and over. This Amp station has just found their own way of playing the same songs more frequently, while butchering them in the process. I use streaming to hear music, and if I'm going to listen to the radio at all, it's news or talk only.

This whole thing doesn't even make sense since the "younger generation" cares even less about terrestrial radio than we (the old men) ever did.

Re: Intros? Outros? DJs? Forget that (Radio station truncates songs for the greater g

It sounds like they are going with the medley/megamix approach... one verse and chorus, then moving on. For stuff like Maroon 5 and Iggy Azalea, perhaps it doesn't matter. I could see the 'verse-chorus-solo/breakdown-chorus' structure being sufficient to get the gist of those sorts of songs. The bigger problem is that the stations will use that extra time for evil... either they'll just load in more commercials or they'll just shorten the loop before you hear the song again. So you'll still hear 4 minutes of the Iggy Azalea song every hour, but it will be half the song every 30 minutes instead of the full song once an hour.

Sorry, bub. Looks like it only took 18 days.
Calgary's AMP radio gives up on short songs format

A Calgary radio station has given up a format that cut Top 40 pop songs roughly in half.

Its goal was to give listeners twice the music, but 90.3 AMP radio decided it wasn't worth it after realizing the potential for lawsuits from the music industry.

It's not the first time AMP Calgary has made national headlines. It came under fire last March for burning $5,000 in cash on air after holding a contest that asked listeners to vote on whether to raffle off the cash or incinerate it.

I expect radio to eventually devolve into Demolition Man-style jingles.

Should have just used songs from the Minutemen. The station could have had 6 songs in 4 minutes.

Considering the musical taste you have shown the vinyl thread, it is mighty brave of you to rag on an old Skynyrd staple.

You joke, but I recall in the 70's being amazed that Slow Ride was actually an 8 minute jam & not just the 4 minute version they played on the radio.

And that Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" was not just a 3 1/2 minute love song, but a 7 minute opus to oral sex & not wasting a drop of 'it'.

But still, this seems like a modern version of the K-Tel album where they used to license a bunch of hit songs & cut them down to where they fit 10 songs to each side of a vinyl album.
