Who would be on your jazz Mount Rushmore?

The Miles Davis thread got me wondering about this: Which four jazz artists would you immortalize on Mount Rushmore?

The first three are easy for me: Satchmo, Duke, and Miles. After that I was going to pick Bird, but realized I'd be skipping Coltrane, Dizzy, Monk...

Damn, I'm the first one who voted! That's never happened to me before here.

It was tough not voting for Fitzgerald or Holliday, but I had to honor the pioneers: Morton, Basie, Ellington, Armstrong.

Good list, Dave.

I think Morton and Holliday are the only ones on the list who were not alive and active when I first started listening to jazz as a child. (My parents had a bunch of albums.) Heck, Picasso was still active when I was a child.

Re: Who would be on your jazz Mount Rushmore?

Satchmo, Davis, and the Duke were obvious picks. I ended up going with Holiday for the fourth spot because of her pervasive influence.

@ JANK:

Yeah, I thought about them too (along with Larry Carlton, Chick Corea, Jan Hammer, Terje Rypdal, and Wayne Shorter/Joseph Zawinul of Weather Report, and so on and so forth), but my list was already 8 long, didn't want to get too crazy with it, Mount Rushmore was already getting ridiculously long...

CORRECT!! Sorry about that Chief.

As for our consensus for Mt Rushmore, I am detecting the only surefire we ALL seem to agree on is Miles.

Thereon it is between Louis, Duke, Bird, Coltrane, ..Brubeck, Monk...aargh

A case could be made for either Blakey or Roach, but, IMO, to qualify for this hypothetical Mt Rushmore, a person would have to be more than "just" a musician - they would need to be an innovator, a great bandleader, and a composer as well.

Look, a guy like Buddy Rich or John Scofield might have been (or still is) a great musician, but think about where jazz would be if neither had been born. I would argue, exactly where it is currently. Now, think where jazz would be if Duke Ellington or Miles Davis had never been born.

Re: Who would be on your jazz Mount Rushmore?

Monk, Miles, Trane, Dolphy

?? I'm never one for the pioneers. Screw Elvis and Chuck Berry too!

(I voted Mingus because Dolphy isn't on the list.)

Bird, Trane, Miles, and Mingus, maybe? There're lots of choices. Damn, I'd hate to do it without Satchmo Louis though... While I love Brubeck, don't know if he'd be one of my picks.

Art Blakey was my pick. This was a tough question.

And just like Mount Rushmore everyone is allowed a terrible pick (Roosevelt).
