Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

Tragically Hip singer Gord Downie diagnosed with terminal brain cancer

Doesn't sound like it will be long until he's added to the long list of music deaths this year.

Damn. Apparently they're still going to tour, which is crazy to me.

I didn't like the new single (at all), but I have very fond memories of a bunch of their music.

Damn.

Love the Hip since their debut EP when I was in HS.

Best wishes to Gord, for what it's worth.

Always been a fan of the Hip, even if over the years I haven't been as into them as I used to be (still buy all the records but haven't seen them live since the In Violet Light days) this news sucks. Over the last 10 years there are many times I've meant to catch them live and something has come up - will definitely be getting tickets for this tour - going to be very emotional but I'd like to pay my respects while the man is still with us.

This news just popped up in my Facebook feed. They have been one of my favorite bands over the past 20 years, but I unfortunately only managed to see them a couple of times. (The last time they came through here was 1998, and they probably drew less than a thousand people.)

Phenomenal final show

Lost it when Gord talked to the crowd just before the first encore. Saw so many fans in tears. The reality of it being the last Hip show was hitting home.

I'm not any kind of Hip super-fan, but tuned in for the last hour and found everything, from the band's performance, to Gordie, to the audience incredibly moving. That was a spectacular show.

I finally have something that will never leave my PVR. Everything about this show, from Gord and the band, to the crowd, to the network airing it uninterupted all made me incredibibly proud to be Canadian.

Man, what a roller coaster. I'm so thankful the CBC made this an event that could be viewed worldwide. I teared up several times, particularly when Gord broke down at the end of "Grace, Too", and also during "Nautical Disaster", which was the song that got me into them so long ago when I first heard it on the local college station. I was also grateful for the outdoor shots that helped drive home the magnitude of it.

re: Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

I've never really been exposed to their music, but I have a good friend in Canada who's seen them about a dozen times over the years, and even got to meet Gord one time, and sat and talked with him for a short time. She got to see both shows in Vancouver and I sat and watched the concert last night with her live on YouTube, and she's just been a mess about this whole thing. It's clear from her stories and reactions and watching the crowd at the show last night what a national treasure this band is, and I'm glad to have experienced it. I hope they release a disc of the concert soon. I'll definitely pick it up.

re: Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

I saw them last week in Toronto and it was a great show - there were a few people crying but it was a much more upbeat and celebratory experience for me. I'll always remember it. The Kingston show broadcast was amazing, a class act all around and watching that was much more emotional. It was a true moment that many people will never forget - even friends and family who aren't Hip fans tuned in and were moved by the whole thing. I hope Gord gets as long as possible to enjoy his time with his family - he's made a mark on an entire country. It will be sad when he does leave us, but what a way to go out. Bravo.

re: Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

As a long time Hip fan (and I'm not Canadian), I was absolutely gutted when I heard Gord had terminal brain cancer. I was very lucky to attend the last Toronto show and watched the Kingston show as well. If this ends up being their last show, what a way to go out! And kudos to CBC for broadcasting the last show.

Musicians are dropping like flies the last couple years - although this was expected.

When i saw this thread on the main board my heart sunk.

I'll be listening to the Hip all day at work.

Re: Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

Admittedly, like most Americans I've never heard of Gord or the Hip.

Please recommend a track or two for me to enjoy.

PS - Which of the Sirius/XM channels that broadcast Canadian music into the States would I be most likely to hear their music on today? Not trying to be an ignoramus, but I honestly know so little about them (other than their impact up North) to know even what genre their music fall under. Thanks.

Re: Gord Downie (Tragically Hip) diagnosed with brain cancer [Update: Dead at 53]

Extremely sad for me, as I saw The Hip at the Minnesota Zoo in 1999, and really loved their music. Until today, I had stayed away from videos of their farewell tour, and wow...it just makes me even more sad. To see Gord on stage, knowing it was the last round, and seeing the pain on his face.
