Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]
The 2014 Rank'em as You Hear Them Thread
I didn't keep up my list last year but I'm going to give it another shot (obligatory statement). Rate your favorite music from this year by whatever method or system you desire. Keep your list in one post (edit!) and keep them in some sort of order. See the second post for my system. Note: Please don't use a "placeholder" post if you don't actually plan on updating your list. :) This thread is to post lists but feel free to discuss the music too. This is a good place to discuss albums that might not warrant their own thread. Hopefully we can introduce each other to some good music this year! |

Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]
12/26 Edit: Finally updated!
Weird year for me. As is typical for me, I listened to a fair amount of metal, but very little of it really resonated with me. Only two "metal" albums on my top 10 list (and Mastodon is getting close to that line) which has to be a record low for me. I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean I'm growing up, but who the hell knows. Both Hozier, and The War on Drugs were easy choices for my top two, and I actually just discovered WoD this month, so it might surplant Hozier as I give it more listens. I saw Hozier on SNL and had bought the album before the episode ended. That album could have been written for me. Just about perfect. Emma Ruth Rundle's second solo album was my early choice for album of the year, and it's a shame more people haven't heard it. Brilliantly produced, acoustic stuff, that will haunt you from the first listen. I've still got a few 2014 albums on my to-listen list that I haven't heard yet, and I think Cloudkicker and Thomas Giles might crack my top-10, but we'll have to see. Album Rankings 1) Hozier - Hozier 2) The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream 3) Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean -- Seriously, more people need to listen to this one. If you aren't hooked by song 3, there's no hope. 4) Taylor Swift - 1989 -- This is not ironic. I love T-Swift more than any 38-year old has any right to. Don't care. 5) He Is Legend - Heavy Fruit -- Stoner metal genius, and so much fun. Great driving music 6) Lissie - Crying to You EP -- It's covers, but it introduced me to Lissie, and I really love it. 7) Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun -- Years biggest surprise for me. It feels simpler (and almost poppy at times!) than their recent stuff, but that's a good thing. 8) First Aid Kit - Stay Gold -- Damn these Swedes can sing 9) Alpha Male Tea Party - Droids -- Math-rock fun in the vein of And So I Watch You From Afar. 10) Jakob - Sines -- Post-rock legends first new album in 10 years is worth the wait. Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]
Tons of stuff in the hopper, here's what we've got so far (excellent music year, IMO):
So far: St. Vincent: St. Vincent - varied, confident, vibrant, catchy. Just a great album and my favorite thing she's ever done. How to Dress Well: What is This Heart: fabulous chill electronic R&B. Warm, organic production, fantastic hooks. Perfect relaxing summer album. Behemoth - The Satanist - a disorienting, intense masterpiece of blackened death metal. Their best album and a definitive high point for the entire genre. A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Sea Went Absent - I can't stop listeing to this one. My Bloody Valentine swooning (and a little of their slight scariness), ambient electronic haze, non-linear songs. It sounds amazing in headphones. One of those albums that requires you to listen to the whole thing. Parquet Courts - Sunbathing Animal - I hope this band stays this prolific because I basically love them. To be honest, it's fairly typical Williamsburg indie guitar rock that squarely hits all of the same references (New York Dolls, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Pavement etc) that the Strokes did a decade ago but it's got great songs, great playing, hilarious lyrics, catchyness etc. Their first album was probably my favorite album last year, this one is more of the same and that's a great thing. Fucked Up - Glass Boys - yet another great album from one of the most consistent (and consistently changing) bands. Shoegaze- influenced, a bit of classic rock, a bit of mid eighties SST punk. A huge, sprawling album. The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream - a beautiful, pastoral collection of Dylan-esque dream rock. Doesn't get cloying, moves forward. Triptykon : Melana Chasmata - experiemental gothic doom metal... stuff. An avalanche of medium -tempo riffs. Pounding martial drums. Bass heavy mix. Long, complex songs. Susprisingly catchy. If you like this sort of thing, look no further Sun Kil Moon - Benji - another set of excellent stream of conciousness acoustic music. Meditative and introspective but not irritatingly self-absorbed. Tokyo Police Club - Forcefield - a sweet little simple pop-rock album. Good driving around in the late spring music. Mastodon - Once More Around the Sun - a return to Crack the Skye complexity and thematic consistency. Boogie sludge metal by the masters of that particular genre Ought - More than Any Other Day - squawking vocal, cheap synth, Velvet Underground-riffing hipster indie rock but performed with passion and inspiration. No wave guitars, David Byrne mannerisms. Good stuff, if you like this sort of thing. Protomartyr - Under Color of Official Right - tossed off, lofi punk album from a supergroup of sorts. Detroit, urban, bleak, literate. The band can be extremely intense and this is a great set of songs. Warpaint - S/T - bass-heavy, dreamy alt rock. The album is a bit uneven, the highs are terrific, the rest drags a bit. Elbow - The Take off and Landing of Everything - yet another solid album from this definitvely English band. They never make anything that blows my socks off, but they never make anything not worth listening to. The Hold Steady - Teeth Dreams - missing the power and conviction of their best work, but still a welcome return to form. I like this album, not sure I'll listen to it too much more, though. Tycho - Awake - perfect studying / eating dinner music, it's not high art, but it's effective. Lower - Seek Warmer Climes - the album is a note-perfect evocation of early eighties post-punk atmosphere. Joy Division, Bauhaus, even U2's first album. The songs save themselves with some solid hooks and thought-out structures before it becomes a straight up ripoff, I like the album but it's not absoltuely great. Insomnium - Shadows of a Dying Sun - completely ridiculous teenage angsty melodic death metal but I kind of love it. The songs are certainly well written and you can't argue with the band's chops. Future Islands - Singles - a few very good tracks, the rest is a bit rote synth-pop The Shrine - Bless Off - middling gritty skater metal/rock. they have the attitude but the songs aren't there yet. Still, they have pontential. Future - Honest - don't get the hype. It's not a terrible album, but it's really not any good. Sort of standard party rap. He trades in a lot of tired cliches. Todd Terje - It's Album Time! - slightly irritating glitchy Scandinavian electronic music. I liked some of his earlier stuff, this one not so mcuh. Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else - huge step backwards for this band after their last (great) album. Wye Oak - Shreik - in trying to redefine themselves as a synthpop band, personifies the more irritating aspects of indie pop to me Broken Bells - After the Disco - didn't like their first album all that mush, like this one even less. Alcest - Shelter - is this even metal anymore? What are they doing? Speedy Ortiz - Real Hair - trying to be clever, ends up annoying. The Afghan Whigs - Do the Beast - awful album, why did they bother. Major Lazer - Apocalypse Soon - the debut was a lot of fun, this lacks all of the silly charm and propulsivness. Really bad. Pixies - Indie Cindy - insulting. |
Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]
St. Vincent has the album of the year so far. (4/5)
Ray Lamontagne - Supernova (3.5/5) - Wasn't sure at first but really dig the psych tinge he put on this record. |
Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]
Just listened to the new one from Echo and the Bunnymen, and it's pretty great. Takes me back to the days when I was an MTV staple.

Although I am de-stickying, I'll not lock it, as from past experience, the avid rankers amongst you may still have some public ranking to do.... |
