Khan - Space Shanty. Brilliant prog/hard rock album. Steve Hillage (Gong), Nick Greenwood (Crazy World of Arthur Brown), Dave Stewart (Egg), just a great, great album that does not get the attention it deserves!

A few from back in my college days:

Swervedriver - Ejector Seat Reservation - you may have heard of this band, but this album is almost impossible to find. It's a shame, it's really good.

Nation of Ulysses - 13 Point Program to Destroy America - one of the best punk albums of the early 90s and yet very few seem to have heard it.

The Bats - Daddy's Highway - a definitive Flying Nun records release. Sort of a New Zealand version of early REM or British C86 music that's a little more dreamy with female backing vocals. Great, beautiful songs.

Bongwater - Double Bummer - a truly weird album featuring Kramer (Shimmy Disc records) and B-list movie star Ann Magnusen. Indescribably great.

Excellent dark instrumental music. Had the pleasure of sharing a bill with them back in the late 90's in NYC.



Related to that, my ex-band from back then: Braindance -Redemption. It was an indie release but pretty popular in the genre. Goth progressive-type stuff.

This is a band of a buddy of mine---The Gothic Rangers. Sort of a dark mix of Springsteen, The Byrds and R.E.M., set in a gothic, Civil War south:

Cactus World News "Urban Beaches" (1986)

Suggested cuts: "The Bridge", "Jigsaw Street", "State of Emergency"

Band discovered by Bono in 1985 & touted as next big thing but experienced sophomore slump and never recovered. I bought this album on vinyl in '86...they also had a well-received EP with great song "Worlds Apart". Probably sounded too much like other Irish/Scottish bands of the day (besides U2, they were competing against the likes of Big Country, the Alarm, etc.).

In the vein of groups like Bikini Kill. Two female members (one 14 and the other 19). Pretty good stuff, you guys should check out their stuff on Youtube, if you like that kind of stuff

Catherine Wheel: Chrome (1993). "Kill Rhythm", "Pain", "Strange Fruit", "I Confess"...goodness gracious, the entire album is sonic bliss.

Along with My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" and Curve's "Doppelganger", love the wall of sound vibe with incredible overdubbed guitars.

Jason & Scorchers: Still Standing (edges out Thunder & Fire). Posted a clip from Conan of their performance of 'White Lies' from an earlier album because it features some of the fiercest shredding ever shown on late-nite tv (have to wonder what sort of pharmaceuticals Warner Hodges consumed before the cameras rolled). Awesome band!

Vigilantes of Love: Driving the Nails (again, hard to pick...Killing Floor is another great album).

Jim Carroll Band: Catholic Boy.

A few more I think most people here would not have heard/heard of, but I could be mistaken:

-Strong in Spirit (1988), Mozart's Money (1995), and Barehanded (1991) by Hugh Blumenfeld. Three stellar albums by a pure modern folkie. Avoid if you don't like folk music.
-Bedtime Stories (1990) by David Baerwald, of "David + David" acclaim.
-Space Flower (1989) by Wild Swans.
-Lovers Speak (1996) by Joan Armatrading.
-Back to Eden (2001) by Terry Brock. Top-notch AOR.
-Fire it Up (2012) by Johnny Reid. I don't know how obscure this is, especially south of the 49th, but it's an album chock-full of marvellous heartland rock. Reid is now fairly well-known up here.
-Sire Sessions: The Rockfield Recordings (1997) by The Searchers. Probably the single best platter of power pop in existence. Irresistible.
-Belief (2001) by Dare. Wonderful Celtic AOR.
-Canada (1992) by Dan Lucas.
-Electricity (1987) and Trust (1992) by Paul Janz. Trite but gorgeous easy-listening from one of the masters of ballads.
-These are the Days (2005) by Barry Russo.
-Paleophonic (1998) by The Rubinoos. Fantastic power pop.
