Is "Blitzkrieg Bop" off the Ramones' first album too obvious an answer? That song did not usher in the album, it ushered in an entire new genre of music.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I held off on buying a CD player. Most of my album purchases were on cassette, and I was noticing an awkwardness to the first song on side 2. And it's because artists were starting to compose their playlists to an entire CD, and the record companies were just chopping it in half for the cassette releases. If you look back on a lot of the great records up until the 80s or so, you'll notice that the first song on side 2 was often the big "hit". Even though vinyl's making a big resurgence, I don't know if you're still getting that strong side 2 opener as much anymore.

Mötley Crüe - In the Beginning, AWESOME intro for the album.

Of course they nicked that from Maiden's "Number of the Beast."

Black Sabbath (x3) is a good one, as is GnR's "Welcome to the Jungle" from "Appetite for Destruction."

I'd also nominate "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from Nirvana's "Nevermind."

And "Once" from Pearl Jam's "Ten."

"Exciter" from Judas Priest's "Stained Class" album. Seriously grabs you by the balls; must have blown folks away in '78 when they brought the album home and listened to it.

Re: Best song to open an album (cd)?

I didn't read through this whole thread, so there may be some duplicates here, but this is what I thought of off the top of my head:

"What's Going On", Marvin Gaye, What's Going On
"Tangled Up In Blue", Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks
"You Are The Sunshine of My Life", Stevie Wonder, Talking Book
"Let's Go Crazy", Prince, Purple Rain
"Brown Sugar", The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers
"Taxman", The Beatles, Revolver
"Station to Station", David Bowie, Station to Station
"Hunter", Bjork, Homogenic
"Begin The Begin", REM, Life's Rich Pageant
"Good Times", Chic, Risque
"Wanna Be Starting Something", Michael Jackson, Thriller
"Painkiller", Judas Priest, Painkiller
"Tarot Woman", Rainbow, Rising
"Mis-Shapes", Pulp, Different Class
"The Queen is Dead", The Smiths, The Queen is Dead
"Hallogallo", Neu!, Neu!
"Bright Yellow Gun", Throwing Muses, University
"Your Phone's Off The Hook (But You're Not)", X, Los Angeles

I could go on for years.

Why don't people just say "my favorite". There's no way to identify Dylan's best song anymore than there is to identify the best flavor of ice cream.

Also, I know it doesn't get a lot of love as an album but I'll give a shout out to Ultimate Sin from the same album by Ozzy.
And staying with hair metal, Cry Tough by Poison on Look What the Cat Dragged In and Lay Your Hands On Me by Bon Jovi on New Jersey seem to set the tone for the start of great albums.

"See No Evil" -- Television, Marquee Moon. My God, how could I forget? I must be an retard...

Also: "Fire On High" -- ELO, Face The Music. A punch to the noids.

Genesis -- Dancing with the Moonlit Knight (from Selling England by the Pound)
Yes -- Close to the Edge

Totally biased fanboy response(s):

King Crimson -- Pictures of a City
King Crimson -- Cirkus
King Crimson -- Neal and Jack and Me

I guess, for the fact that it introduced a completely different-sounding era of the band, that "Elephant Talk" could fit okay on this list, too. Oh, and of course:

I just realized that this is technically the second track of the album. I don't know how I ever forgot the 40 second a cappella opening song.

Shit yeah. I was going to include "Hallogallo", but it's a toss up between that song and (the similar and equally awesome) "Fur Immer".

Since this thread could go on for eternity, I still crown "Like a Rolling Stone" the winner and champion.

How about "Plainsong" by the Cure from Disintegration? Or "Inbetween Days" from the Head on the Door?

Let's just name the first song on every great album ever released.

My turn: "Accidents Will Happen", Armed Forces, Elvis Costello and the Attractions
