My own personal favorite is Pulp's "The Fear" from This Is Hardcore. In addition to it being a great song, it perfectly sets up the themes of the album.

"Welcome to the Jungle" is like an invitation to the rest of the album and an introduction to Guns N Roses themselves.

When I first heard the album (Via boot-casette) I actually did think there was more than 1 singer ("It's so easy","Mr. Brownstone")

Re: Best song to open an album (cd)?

"Invaders" might be the WORST album opener on any classic Maiden album. It pales in comparison to Prowler, Ides/Wrathchild, Where Eagles Dare, Aces High, or Moonchild.

Anyway the correct answer is VICTORIA from The Kinks's "Arthur".

I might actually have to change my vote to "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands".
Splendid choices, but my most-loved Dylan songs are the unreleased "Series of Dreams", "The Times They Are A-Changin'" (which is actually an album-opener), and the unreleased "Abandoned Love".

As to the topic, my favourite album opener is my go-to for so many of these best-of questions, Tom Cochrane's timeless masterpiece "The Boy Inside the Man".

What's that have to do with anything? This is about opening tracks. And best song Dylan ever wrote is clearly "Visions of Johanna" (which he actually performed in his last tour).

Re: Best song to open an album (cd)?

This is probably an odd choice, but I'm going to say "The Prowler" by Iron Maiden. It's not one of their most notable songs, isn't a played live very often, and doesn't appear on any greatest hits albums, but it's the first song on their first album, has an interesting opening riff, decent hook and melody, and promises greater things to come.

That plus (sorry Bruce Dickinson lovers) Paul Di'Anno rules.

One of the best opening tracks for a death metal album,

This.

As far as Iron Maiden goes, nothing beats "Aces High."

"Two Tickets to Paradise" might be the mother of them all.

The song BLACK SABBATH by the band BLACK SABBATH from the album BLACK SABBATH.

Check and mate

Or "Hole In The Sky" from Sabotage. That one's all kinds of anus-shredding awesome too.

"Somewhat Damaged" by Nine Inch Nails is one of my favourites, as it sets the tone for the rest of the album. I listened to it today, just to be sure, and had to keep listening to the following tracks.

Back on the metal track, "Narcosynthesis" on Nevermore's Dead heart in a Dead World is a great start. Also "Wreath" on Opeth's Deliverance.

"Bridge Burning" by Foo Fighters off of Wasting Light is a recent example of a great opening to a great album.

If we're going to sit here an make a list of brilliant songs that Dylan wrote, this thread could go on for pages. But yes, Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts" is brilliant, I've listened to it countless time and still haven't figured it out. Though I'd cast a vote for "Tryin' to Get to Heaven" or the superb "Not Dark Yet" from his later work. And "Love Sick" sets the tone for an album as superbly as any song I've ever heard.

What's that have to do with anything? This is about opening tracks. And best song Dylan ever wrote is clearly "Visions of Johanna" (which he actually performed in his last tour).
Figures I missed this tour.

I was about to say that. Great song that sets the bar high for the rest of album.

Dylan starts of Highway 61 Revisited with "Like A Rolling Stone." That's a tough act to follow.

"Thunder Road" open Born to Run, and side two kicks off with the title track. Goddamn. Bruce has made some great records, but that young and hungry quality of this one makes it hard to top.

Any album that stars with "The Man Comes Around" is bound to be a stunner. RIP Johnny Cash. Truly a one-of-a-kind talent
