This banter comes up every year, dude.
Rap doesn't belong. They (insert group) aren't Rock n Roll. KISS will be snubbed (used to be Rush) and the RRHF is a joke.

Come on now, it's well established that it's the "Popular Music" Hall of Fame.

Another year, another Foghat snub. These people are the scum of the earth.

The list of snubs is long. No Iron Maiden? No Slayer? No Joy Division?

No sale.

I realized last night that Peter Gabriel is technically already in the HoF as part of the Genesis induction from a few years back.

We've now gotten to the point where this is going to become more contentious and fragmented, since, post-1977, there started to become a big divergence between rock artists that were popular and those that were critically acclaimed. Should Gang of Four be in the HoF? Should X?

Personally I think this is all nonsense and the idea of such a hierarchy is bullshit, but I guess it matters to some people. All I know is, when I go to Cleveland, it's for a show, and not to see the guitar Jimmy Page played in 1975.

The RRHOF inductions have nothing to do with whose memorabilia is on display at the museum. In fact, the HOF is just a hallway of plaques and the most boring part of the museum.

I know, I went there once. And I wasn't equating the HoF inductees with the displays in the museum, I was pointing out that, when I'm in Cleveland, I'd much rather go to a an actual gig than see rock and roll memorabilia. It seems to me the concept of "rock and roll memorabilia" is a little sad.

Seriously, check out Let it Be by the Replacements. A lot of people think they were a shabby, trashy band but this album is a masterpiece. It has fun pop, rock, wistful ballads. It's amazing.

It's my favorite rock album of the '80s.

I think most people going to Cleveland at all are only going for the RnR HOF.

Hüsker Dü Zen Arcade was on SST if I remember correctly and was probably the most influential album for me at the time. And REM Reckoning was another for me (on IRS). IRS was distributed by a major label, was it not? Those two records transitioned me out of the hardcore punk scene and into actual music.

I have all the Replacements albums up until and including Tim which I think was their major label debut. None of them compared to the two above records.

And once they get in, that will surely pave the way for The Comsat Angels and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry being inducted.

Re: 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

I'd vote for...

Nirvana (strongly dislike them, but you cannot deny their influence or success)
KISS (should have been in years ago)
Yes (giants in their field)
Peter Gabriel (brilliant songwriter)
Deep Purple (one of the best bands ever, and they were a huge influence on a ton of bands/artists)

I'm big enough to support bands/artists I don't necessarily like - simply because they are deserving.
