Putting together a party playlist 1970-2013
**THE PLAYLIST IN THIS POSTING HAS BEEN UPDATED - TO SEE THE MOST CURRENT UPDATE SCROLL DOWN - THANKS!**
I'm hosting a party this Friday night and thought I'd do something different with the play list. What I'm trying to do is a pick one track per year from 1970 to present day. I am mostly open to suggestions. I will put two ** next to the tracks which are non-negotiable to me. And, I will put one * next to tracks I really like for the party but am open to change. In attendance will be ages ranging from early twenties to late 30's. I'm having most of the trouble with the 70's. I think that the OP was sufficiently specific about both the time frame and which tracks were non-negotiable. Thus to bring in another time frame and slam one of his non-negotiable tracks seems, shall we say, somewhat thoughtless at best. YMMV.
Anyhoo, to respond directly to the question, for either 1994 or 1995 (it was released both years) maybe consider Seal's 1996 Grammy Award winning "Kiss from a Rose". I may revisit the thread if the inspiration takes me, as there are many non-starred entries that I think the OP might welcome being constructively displaced. That said, as I can see that OP has mostly avoided the rockier side of "pop", I'll have to resist the temptation to suggest a slew of my "heavy" faves :( |

PS) Are you going to shuffle the tracks or play them in order? If the latter, maybe reverse order would be an idea if you want to start with better known stuff and leave the more mellow material for later on.
Also, if you are worried about the possible lack of recognition factor (and I have no real idea what plays on US radio stations listened to by 20s and 30s), there are tracks from the 70s that have achieved greater recognition more recently through being included in films and tv shows e.g. off the top of my head: The Who's "Baba O'Riley" and Stealers Wheels' "Stuck in the Middle with You". |

Since you're going with stuff most people will know, 1970 is a read dud. How about ABC by the Jackson 5? You could replace 1974 with Kung Fu Fighting or Piano Man.

I won't be doing ABC as I personally cannot stand that song. But, thanks for the suggestion. I have just swapped out Bowie with James Browns - Get Up (I feel like being a) Sex Machine. I will also be checking out the other serious suggestions as well and will update the playlist as I make changes. I have my own collection, I have the top 100 from 1970-2012 compiled myself. Party vibe the list after listening to each track in that years 100 listen to these Listed them so farther down you go the lower ranked it was that year in the final top 100. And still no party without Prince haha.

Updated playlist. INXS (new sensation) moved from 1988 to 1987 as I embarrassed myself getting the years mixed up.

Hiro, Led Zeppelin - Immigrant song Duran Duran - Hold Back the Rain Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun The above 3 tracks won't make the cut for the party, but will find their way onto my running playlist. Thanks! Far East Movement (like a g6) was moved to 2010 (I had it in the wrong year) Arctic Monkeys (brick by brick) is now the 2011 track. |

I would suggest that you rethink your 79-80 picks.
My Sharona is fun for 90 seconds but the song is more than 4 minutes long. It gets really plodding and repetitive. Cars is just a suck-hole, long and boring. You're setting yourself up for 10 minutes of energy drain. Think about Nick Lowe's Cruel to be Kind, The Pina Colada Song (girls will sing along guaranteed) and Blondie's Call Me. These will keep that energy up. |

Baba O'Riley is one of the greatest rock songs of all time, but do yourself a favor and check out River Deep Mountain High by the Supremes and Four Tops, and think about which is the better party song.
Also, you might want to consider Blitzkrieg Pop instead of the Sex Pistols --look at the voting in the favorite punk band thread |
