What is the most overplayed rock song?

Let's say a rock* song that you, personally, or we, society, do not need to hear for a while, because we have heard it many times before.

At first, I would think: easy! Smash Mouth's “All Star” which you are probably humming right now. To your regret.

But then, I realized that this song is still too recent. Surely there's been a song you haven't heard in ten years (or more) which is still overplayed.

If I never hear Tom Cochrane's “Life is a Highway” again, I will have listened to it enough times.

I love Life is Highway, however I haven't heard the Cochrane version on the radio in years, only pussified country version.

Money-Pink Floyd

Blinded by the Light-Manfred Mann(seriously, play Bruce's version for fuck sakes!)

Closer to the Heart-Rush (I love Rush but the Canadian content rule here kills this song)

Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana

In Australia when I worked in community radio, something like 20% of songs needed to be by an Australian artist. Is this what you are referring to? And does it affect commercial radio as well?

Yes, Who Let the Dog's Out? is a seminal rock anthem, for sure.

Also, Life is a Highway is the worst song evar.

Listen to 10 minutes of any Clear Channel classic rock station. Every song they play fits the bill.

I'd have to say Boston's Long Time/Foreplay or whatever the fuck it's called. Suicide inducing.

Yep, its commercial radio here in Canada that are forced to play a certain amount of Canadian music. I thought it was around 50%, but maybe thats just my imagination. Bryan Adams spoke out against it in the 80s and took some heat for being anti-Canadian. He said music should be played because its good enough regardless of it being Canadian. If we feel our music will get played based on the "Can-con" rule, then artists will make mediocre music, and he was right.

Yes, I certainly think there's a difference between a question about bands you can't stand (which this wasn't) and particular songs you don't need to hear again because they've been played to death for many many years.

Oddly, I scarcely listen to the radio these days but some of the tracks that create the strongest nostalgic feelings are those from my childhood/teens that were on BBC Radio 1) playlists back then and which I may not even have especially enjoyed much at the time. Many wouldn't even count as "rock"!
