Nirvana In Utero 20th anniversary reissue Sept 24, 2013

Personally this album is superior to Nevermind.

the 20th-anniversary reissue of Nirvana's third and final studio album, In Utero comes out on September 24, 2013. In addition to the original album, the expanded re-release will feature previously unreleased demos, B sides and live tracks, including a complete live performance from 1993 featuring the final touring lineup of the band.

The "super deluxe" reissue will span three CDs and one DVD. The reissue will also be available in two-CD and three-LP packages, and the "Live and Loud" concert film from December 13th, 1993 will be available as a standalone DVD.

I dunno. I've always felt that the production and mix on that album kept it from greatness. I mean, personally, I think that songs like "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies" rival anything on Nevermind. But their production is just terrible. (angrily shakes fist at Steve Albini)

I hope they nuke and brickwall the original album like they did with Nevermind for uniformity.

Don't blame Albini. Blame the band. They thought the production on Nevermind was way too slick and purposely wanted a rougher production for In Utero.

Steve Albini was a legendary underground producer who produced many of Nirvana's favorite bands. Actually, Albini hates the term "producer" and calls himself a "recorder" because all he does is record, not "produce".

Bring it all on! If they released every live recording of their 1993-1994 tour that they have in the vaults, I'd buy each and every one!

Re: Nirvana In Utero 20th anniversary reissue Sept 24, 2013

I'd be interested in the standalone "Live and Loud" DVD; presumably it's the full show and not just the edited MTV version.

Not sure what's going to be on the two bonus CDs. After "With the Lights Out" I can't imagine there's much left on the carcass for them to pick off. I'll probably pass on this release; I can rarely give any of these "demo" recordings more than a single listen if even that.

To be fair this reissue campaign was put in place 4 years ago. It's not as if they're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this release. It's pretty stupid to whine about something that everyone was expecting. Three albums released two years apart, three 20th anniversary releases. Hardly a travesty.

For what it's worth I think Sliver: The Best of the Box is the only shameless instance of catalog whoring. Everything else is actually pretty tasteful as far as posthumous releases and reissues go.

I'd have to wait and see what other tracks are included. I'd probably get a 2-CD set or just buy MP3's of the B-sides I want.

I didn't buy the Super Deluxe Nevermind, but I did get the Devonshire Mix tracks, and those have since replaced the original album tracks as my favorite/definitive versions.

Not if it turns out to be a Best Buy Exclusive like the Nevermind reissue. Amazon had it up for preorder for months until the Best Buy deal was announced. I just placed my order for In Utero on Amazon but I'm expecting a similar situation this time.

Best Buy had the 4CD/1DVD edition. It was basically the 2-CD set plus the Vig mix on disc 3 and the audio of Live at the Paramount on disc 4, then the DVD was Live at the Paramount with the Nevermind music videos. The Live at the Paramount Blu-ray was also Best Buy exclusive, though Live & Loud was shot on video so I'm not expecting a Blu-ray this time.

I forgot about that. I think I passed on the BB version since it was the DVD and not the BD.

It was only a timed exclusive for the box and Blu-ray.

I don't think so, at the very least I don't think it's expired yet. On Amazon all the copies being sold are from 3rd-party sellers.

Re: Nirvana In Utero 20th anniversary reissue Sept 24, 2013

I got mine sold from Amazon for $109.99 in late October of 2011 when the time exclusivity ran out from BB which was like a month I believe.

Re: Nirvana In Utero 20th anniversary reissue Sept 24, 2013

The full contents of Nirvana’s upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of In Utero have been revealed. As Rolling Stone reports, the 70-song, three-disc reissue includes a remastered version of the album, a new mix by producer Steve Albini, and 40 unreleased demos, rehearsals, live performances, B-sides, and never-before-heard instrumentals.

Among the highlights:

– Steve Albini’s versions of “Heart Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” (these tracks were mixed by Scott Litt for the album’s final version).

– In Utero b-sides “Marigold”, “Moist Vagina”, “Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip”, “I Hate Myself and Want to Die”, which appeared on The Beavis and Butt-head Experience compilation, and the hidden track appearing on 1993 compilation album No Alternative.

– Litt’s remixed single version of “Pennyroyal Tea”.

– “Forgotten Tune”, a “recently unearthed instrumental recorded by Nirvana during an In Utero-era rehearsal,” as well as “Jam”, which was recorded during the same October 25th, 1992 jam session at Seattle’s Word of Mouth Productions that resulted in early versions of “Tourette’s”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, and “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter”.

– The Word of Mouth demos of “Tourette’s”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, and “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter,” along with Dave Grohl’s 1990 demo version of “Marigold”.

– Reproductions of Cobain’s handwritten lyrics, a four-page letter Albini wrote the band prior to recording detailing his plans for In Utero, and liner notes written by comedian Bobcat Goldwaith.

The reissue will be available in various configurations including as 3CD/1DVD Super Deluxe set, which includes a full recording of the band’s “Live and Loud” concert at Seattle’s Pier 48 from December 13th 1993. The reissue will also be released as a 2-CD set and triple vinyl set, while the “Live and Loud” concert film will be available as a standalone DVD, as well.
