...Anyways, I haven't had time to sit down and listen to it all the way through yet, but so far I haven't really been that impressed by this Passion recording. It's never been one of my favorite Sondheim shows anyways, but this version seems like it's lacking... Well, passion - which is kind of essential to an emotionally intense show like this. But that was just based on a very cursory listen - I might change my mind once I listen to the whole thing though and am able to pay more attention. Other than that, I've read some good things about Giant and Dogfight, so I'll give those a try eventually, along with Kinky Boots and Matilda. Gotta try out some of the revival recordings too, particularly Cinderella - which my sister really enjoyed when she saw it in NYC a few months. |
Re: 'Broadway'/Musical Theater Album release 2013 thread
This is one of my newer acquisitions. PS Classics is always so solid, and I figure a pure Kern revue would be heaven, but it was a little hit and miss for me. Maybe there wasn't quite enough material for a consistent two-disc album.
http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.48702...h=184&c=7&rs=1 I also wonder if the Rebecca Luker Kern album released nearly concurrently would be a less academic listen. I heard mixed reviews of Scandalous, which initially played here in Seattle as "Saving Aimee." Great performance by Carolee Caromello, but I don't remember the score being all that memorable. One strange casting decision was to have the same actor play two different boyfriends/husbands of Semple. I don't think it was a "concept" about sameness or types--as far as I could tell, they just cast the same actor twice, and it struck me as a little confusing (it could have been a late cast switch or something, I suppose). http://ts3.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.48684...h=180&c=7&rs=1

Sorry, that came out kind of garbled--I should have said something like "Sondheim (the composer, not the DVDTalk member)"--but I'm just glad you visited this thread and caught the reference. The composer has certainly been accused of leaving people cold, and for this show as much as any other. I agree it's not one of my favorites, but there have been times when I feel like I "get it" and feel the intensity. In this case, I just don't think the performers do a very good job of conveying the emotion in the material - but, once again, I might change my mind when I give it a closer listen. As for Passion as a show - I find it incredibly beautiful at times. The ending never fails to give me chills. On the other hand, there are times when I find Fosca to be unbearable and some of the dialogue/lyrics seem almost laughable in their over-the-top earnestness (if that makes any sense.) It's a weird show, and I kind of go back and forth in how I feel about it. |

http://www.thephantomoftheopera.com/...hRAHPoster.jpg I'll check out the Sarah Brightman cd as I've liked her voice and have all the previous albums. I've been listening to Wicked, Rent and Book of Mormon recently. I keep hoping that they will release ad DVD of the Wicked stage show like they did for the final Rent performance. Skip the Rent movie as it was awful (even though it featured most of the original Broadway cast). I have it but hate the way they shifted around songs and changed dialogue.. How hard would it have been to follow the script from the Broadway show? Add some lines as necessary, but follow the basic blue print that's already laid out and worked. |

My London recording was one of those early early ones that has one track per CD. I think the story at the time was that it was so hot that they just tried to get it out to market as fast as they could, so it's kind of like a memory of the audiocassette days. I've always thought about replacing it, but I already have the London highlights, the Canadian one, and some other miscellany so I really haven't sat down and regretted not having it available.

See, I like the Rent movie quite a bit. I saw the show once on stage and it left me a bit confused and cold, but when I saw the movie I understood the characters much better, and I didn't know the show well enough to notice the differences, other than stuff like non-musical answering machines. I saw one of the recent tours with Rapp and Pascal, which was cool.

The musical numbers notably the Hell nightmare sequence was garish and over the top as only Matt and Trey (and the other third writer - who's name I've forgotten) can deliver. As for Chess, the UK CD of the concept album is noticeably lower in volume for some bizarre reason, even without ripping it to Itunes. What? no one's heard the song 'One Night in Bangkok' ?? It was the only song that got radio airplay with a lot of folk not knowing it came from an actual musical. |

I think my first experience of Wilkinson was in the Evita recording, which didn't thrill me (I might have already been accustomed to Patinkin), but agree he was great in this role. |

It also doesn't help that my genre collecting has fallen off the last few years due to lack of listening time. :(

Re: 'Broadway'/Musical Theater Album release 2013 thread
I'm digressing here, but I didn't realize there was a new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opening this December on the West End - no word on when or if it will be exported to this side of the pond.
http://newimages.bwwstatic.com/uploa...ardposter1.jpg "Stephen Ward" The Aldwych Theatre is the home of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical Stephen Ward with direction from Richard Eyre and both the book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black. It will be an opportunity to see a brand new production from one of the biggest names in West End theatre, who previously brought us everything from The Phantom of the Opera to the recent production of The Wizard Of Oz. This musical takes audiences back to a period of time in the early 1960s when a political scandal – the Profumo Affair - gripped society. This retelling of the tale will be bolstered by the choreography of Stephen Mear and will no doubt feature memorable music composed by Lloyd Webber himself. The Profumo Affair took place in 1963 and followed an relationship that took place between John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War in the Harold Macmillan government, and Christine Keeler, the mistress of someone said to be a soviet spy. The married Profumo lied about the event in the House of Commons and this damaged the Macmillan government greatly. Amongst the scandal, however, was Dr Stephen Ward, an acquaintance of Keeler and the osteopath who introduced the pair at a party. The musical focuses on this man and the way in which his life turns upside down in a story that involved betrayal and even plots of murder. Richard Eyre, directing, has been behind a wealth of shows over the years ever since his early years as Associate Director of the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. His credits include a host of shows at the National Theatre, where he was director from 1987 to 1997, and this saw him direct the likes of Guys And Dolls, both prior to his time as director of the South Bank venue in the early 1980s and again in 1996. Beyond that he has also directed Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre in 1980, Hedda Gabler at the Almeida and Duke of York’s Theatre in 2005 and Private Lives at the Vaudeville Theatre in 2010 (which later appeared on Broadway). Audiences can catch Stephen Ward The Musical at the West End’s Aldwych Theatre from Thursday 19th December 2013 (previews from Tuesday 3rd December 2013). ~~ [I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread topic] |

The first act could be tightened up a bit - at nearly three hours with intermission - it's a little bit exhausting. Idina Menzel though - wow! the last solo song she sang was just epic... looking forward to owning the cast album when it comes out next year- the songs are tight and exceptional! |
Re: 'Broadway'/Musical Theater Album release 2013 thread
This past weekend, I watched the 25th Anniversary production of Phantom via Netflix streaming. I had avoided it until now because I had thought it was going to be something like the Les Mis Anniversary productions where it would just be various actors on stage singing the songs. I was pleasantly surprised when I started watching it and it was an actual recording of the show. It was very well done and the extra bits at the end were nice to watch as well. I'm going to have to pick up the Blu-Ray and album soon to add to my collection. I have the Original Broadway cast recording, the Movie soundtrack, and the Canadian Cast recording (with Colm Wilkinson as the Phamtom).
Now.. if they would only release something like this for Wicked and Les Mis I would be happy. I want to be able to watch an actual stage performance. I was happy when Rent released one a few years ago. The horrible Rent movie I have purged from my memory as that was just awful. I haven't watched the recent Les Mis movie yet, though I've heard decent things about it. |
Re: 'Broadway'/Musical Theater Album release 2013 thread
Yeah, Les Miz works pretty well as a movie if you can get past the Russell Crowe singing.

For the movie version of Phantom, I did like the Christine voice, but the Phantom's was off and made me cringe at times. Just something seemed not right with it. It won't take the place of an actual staged performance, which I can watch now whenever I want.. but it was interesting to see how they fleshed out some of the details through scenery and set pieces that might have been more difficult or not done as well on a stage. |

Re: 'Broadway'/Musical Theater Album release 2013 thread
Rebecca Luker: Quite nice. Sometimes I find her a little precious for my tastes, but I like the selections, including some Kern I've never heard. Some is a bit jazzier than I'm used to getting from her as well.
Cinderella: Yeah, this can be a fun show on stage, but it's just not a great score. I like Laura Osnes from her days on the Grease reality show, and so I like her singing In My Own Little Corner, but the rest of it doesn't really need to be listened to. OK, I do like Stepsisters' Lament and Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful, I suppose, and I apparently didn't have this show in my collection so I'll give myself a pass for it. Pippin: This is a solid recording, less quirky and dated than the OBC and probably my first choice for general listening. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the score because it's so weird, as is the show as a whole. But Corner of the Sky is a great song, and I'm not particularly wedded to the distinctive voices of the original cast--which quality-wise are not as good as this cast--so this is good for me. Side note that there are four sing-along versions including Corner of the Sky, which proves that I am not a true tenor. |
