Ray Manzarek, 74, dies in Germany. R.I.P.

Ray Manzarek, the founding keyboardist for the Doors, passed away this morning in Germany, according to a statement from his publicist. The cause was bile duct cancer.

As a member of the legendary rock band that formed in 1965 in Los Angeles and effectively ended with the death of frontman Jim Morrison in 1971 (though the group continued to perform and release music in other iterations for many years), Manzarek became an enduring symbol of the era — he was portrayed by Kyle McLachlan in the 1991 Oliver Stone biopic The Doors, and wrote a best-selling memoir about his experiences, Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors, in 1998.

The Doors sold more than 100 million albums worldwide on the strength of hits like ”Hello, I Love You,” “Riders on the Storm,” “Light My Fire,” and “Break On Through to the Other Side.” Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Pablo, and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Manzarek’s name to standup2cancer.org.

Really surprised and saddened hearing of this news. Putting on The Doors debut album now.

sad, but I would have loved the Doors a million times more without the cheesy organ music.

Along with his work in The Doors, loved his influence on the band X in their early years. Wish I could have seen him play with them at least once. RIP Ray Manzarek.

74, it's so hard thinking of guys like him that I grew up with while a teenager being an age like that. Remember when you were in your early teens and "I hope I die before I get old" was self evident.

A great keyboard player in a great band.

The Doors never did much for me, so I choose to remember him as the producer of X and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Wonder who they're going to use to comment on Jim the Shaman in future Door's documentaries.

Totally - Los Angeles, Wild Gift and especially Under the big black sun are still three of my favourite albums all produced by Manzarek. (though there was too much organ on the album cuts of the Los Angeles Album IMHO)

Also I think he did some producing on the plimsouls or Echo n the bunnymen I forget which (those days are a bit hazy for me).

Anyways, bummer man, RIP.

It was Echo & The Bunnymen. He played on People Are Strange and Bedbugs and Ballyhoo.

Like others here, The Doors were a bit before my time, but I loved his work with X. It's funny, too---the frst four albums he produced for them sound timeless. They went for a new producer in 1985 to record their album Ain't Love Grand?----and that album, while not terrible, sounds exactly like it was made in.....1985.

Re: Ray Manzarek, 74, dies in Germany. R.I.P.

Ray Manzarek breaks on through to the other side and reunites with Jim Morrison.

"The power existed in every member of The Doors. We all understood that sinking into the rhythm of the music and we all tried to do that and when we all did it together it was invariably an incredible show." - -- Ray Manzarek

You will be missed Ray.

Re: Ray Manzarek, 74, dies in Germany. R.I.P.

I never really listened to music much growing up. In the late 80s, I wound up picking up John Densmore's memoirs for some reason. After reading it, I figured I ought to listen to some of the Doors' music. I was hooked, and from there I never looked back.

Even all these years later, I still love the Doors and so much of that is due to the unique sound of Ray's Vox Continental. I love that sound. So many great riffs. The sounds he got out of that organ ... amazing. Alabama Song. Light My Fire. Strange Days. Soul Kitchen. Wintertime Love. Love Street. I think my favorite is When the Music's Over, but there are so many great songs.

Rest in Peace, Ray, and thanks for all the great music.

Re: Ray Manzarek, 74, dies in Germany. R.I.P.

I actually think I like Manzarek's utterly distinctive organ sound more than I do Morrison's overwrought bombast. When I think of the Doors, I tend to think of the music more than I do the singing. While a lot of it is rather dated and cheesy now, I don't think Manzarek's work gets as much credit as it perhaps should.

The Doors are true legends and Manzarek was a big reason why. This feels like a great time to play When The Music's Over...

Even though they were before my time, The Doors managed to become my all time favorite band. Ray was instrumental in making the music and he made playing the organ cool! Break on through, Ray! R.I.P.

Never thought the organ sound was cheesy at all. It made many of those Doors tunes blast with life. I really liked this guy and am sad about the news. Thankful he was chosen as X's producer as well because of how amazing those early tracks are. "The World's A Mess It's In My Kiss" is just pure, grade A work and Ray was in that mix. RIP. I had mixed feelings about bringing out Ian to sing as Jim last decade, but it was cool to be in the same studio at CNN when they stopped by and performed one time.

No, there's this one, released back in 1999:

I used to own it, but I needed the money and sold it on eBay several years ago. Naturally, not before ripping them first.
