KMFDM - "Kunst" 2/26/13

Yeah only two months late. I didn't realize they had an album out. So here's a YouTube video with snippets.

Definitely closer to the Angst/Nihil era, which works for me. I hated the last 3 records.

Well damn, I thought there would be at least a few fans here.

I downloaded it a couple months ago, then deleted it.

I guess their 'schtick' just got old for me.... *shrug*

About the same as WTF?! and Blitz. Not real thrilled about the Kill Mother-Fuckin Depeche Mode thing. Just kind of cheesy at this point. Some good stuff on here I'm sure I'll come to like more with repeated listens. They need a "refresher" to their sound though. Lucia has been the female vocalist for almost 15 years now. One of the best things about the 90's KMFDM was the variety in vocalists.

And not really related except by label and genre, but Juno Reactor released a new album this week. Pretty decent - definitely like it more than the last one.

Good points, bunk. I find a lot of industrial bands just churn out new records simply out of habit. Understanding that it's an "underground" genre (with the exception of NIN) and really, how much more can you push the boundaries with a formula of razor sharp geetars, programmed rhythms & drum machines and growling-esque vocals?

VNV Nation is by far the only the industrial (esque) band that excels and can appeal to a much wider demographic. They're signed to Metropolis here in the U.S. too bunk, just like the aforementioned acts.

For some reason I've never really looked into VNV. What's a good starting point?

part of the problem with KMFDM lacking freshness is the lineup has been locked for years. Back in the day you had the three primaries and guests who came and went with each album. Then En Esch and Gunther Schulz left, Lucia came in, married Sascha, and the other 3 (Jules, Andy, Steve) have been there since Attak or WWIII.

I really wish Sascha would make peace with Esch and Schulz. He needs those two.

VNV Nation has been very consistent over the years. As someone who's never been exposed to their music before, I'd suggest their 2007 album Judgement as a good starting point.

I've never gotten in to KMFDM but since I've never seen another thread here for a Metropolis Records artist I had to check it out. :)

Cool thanks for the recommendation. As for Metropolis, Front Line Assembly is the big one for me. I've been into these guys since I heard Rhys' work producing Fear Factory's Demanufacture album back in 1995. They have yet to disappoint me. Even the recent AirMech instrumental record wth the soundtrack tunes from a video game is actually pretty good.

The newest album, "Automatic". First track, you'll be hooked.

Awesome, awesome song. They're one of those acts that almost get better with age.

Bunkaroo, I'd also suggest Imperial Reaction if you're more in to Industrial than say EBM or synthpop. They're one of my favorite bands, but their sound has changed considerably since their first album. They've taken a more aggressive electronic approach over the years.

Personally, I'm more in to EBM. Blaqk Audio and Assemblage 23 are my favorite acts, but I also highly recommend anything by Neuroticfish. They disbanded in 2008 but announced the project has gotten back together and will be releasing new material later this year.

I've been more of a casual fan of KMFDM first hearing their tunes on Beavis and Butthead and then for the Manga promotional trailers during the early Manga anime releases.

I might give Kunst a spin, though.

I will admit my tastes usually go with the bands that use guitars in some fashion whether they're live or sampled. That's how I got into FLA's Millennium and all the KMFDM stuff. Some of the FLA stuff is completely electronic though and I like that too.

I heard some Assemblage 23 years ago but I recall not getting into too much. I tend to go for the stuff with more instrumental variety. I will check out the latest VNV though.

Do you have a link for Imperial Reaction? I'm not finding it on iTunes or through Google for some reason.

EDIT: Nevermind - I see it's actually Imperative Reaction. I'm guessing you were a victim of autocorrect. :)

Bunk, it's Imperative Reaction. I have all their records. Need a starting point?

"As We Fall" is a classic album.

Not me. Just sampled a bunch of songs on YouTube. They sound like an electronic version of R.E.M. But to each his own.

Yes, apologies. That's what I get for typing from my phone.

Eulogy for the Sick Child is their first album, but to me it's their weakest effort (personal preference on their sound), as they were still finding the genre they wanted to really be. Their album As We Fall was the first one I listened to and I became an instant fan. They're easily one of my favorite bands today.

I think that's more personal preference and what genres of electronic music you enjoy. I don't consider VNV Nation to be anywhere near electro-Industrial like other acts such as Wumpscut or Velvet Acid Christ.

Re: KMFDM - "Kunst" 2/26/13

OK so far the VN stuff and Imperative Reaction sounds good. I gotta decide if I can get into the VNV vocals enough to enjoy them. They kind of remind me of Project Pitchfork, which I like, specifically Eon:Eon. That's an old one though.

While I was looking for Imperative Reaction on the Metropolis site I saw FLA has a new record coming in July. Great news. I love jamming some FLA out of my car in the summer! :)

As far as I know, I'm the only member sporting a KMFDM album for a name. :D

Yeah, the recent albums have been pretty samey. I too wish En Esch and Senor Schulz would return, but that may never happen.

I did like En Esch and Mona Mur's CD's together. This that recalls KMFDM of the 90's, but I enjoyed it.

I did buy "Kunst" based on someone saying it was pretty good. I've listened to it a few times. Not as good as the golden era, but I didn't hate it either.
