To each his own, R is my least favorite, I still like it, but it sounds pretty thin in parts.

If you get the first album, get the deluxe version .. It will have The Bronze and These Aren't The Droids You Are Looking For on it. I think there are 2 others as well not on the regular release. The Bronze is a fun song

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I think the most recent QotSA album is their best, and the vinyl package is absolutely killer.

Many polarizing opinions on the QotSA albums. I hadn't made any purchases yet. I might have to renew my spotify subscription so I can give them all a decent listen before buying.

Here's one thing to keep in mind, at least that I've found, with all QOTSA albums - they're all growers. I didn't particularly take to any of them on the first couple of listens, but they all slowly revealed their greatness to me over repeated listens.

Personally, my favorites are the ...Like Clockwork, Era Vulgaris and Rated R, but they're all good after you give them a proper chance.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I think QOTSA have gotten better as they've gone along. I'd actually start with the most recent and work your way back - it'll make the older, less immediate records easier to take in.

Agree with that ... I love Era Vulgaris now, but after first listen I was thinking "what the fuck was that" .. same with Lullabies.

Renewing the Spotify for a month to give these a spin is probably a good move

As someone said, opinions on this greatly differ...I think their earlier stuff is much more interesting, original and enduring... 'Rated: R' is by far the best QoTSA for me...

Somewhat off topic, I love Songs for the Deaf but can anyone else not stand the radio excerpts. Ughhh.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

^ that's the only album I'm familiar with, mostly because of the singles, but I also had several CD samplers with some of their songs on there like "Song for the Dead." However, this seems to be the one album not readily available for my vinyl consumption, so I'm going to renew spotify today and I should be able to give them all a fair go on my work commute.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

For QOTSA vinyl, ... Like Clockwork (the album released last year) is really good ... the albums are 45s and just sound fantastic. Era Vulgaris has some cool packaging (4 10" albums) ... the rest of the albums packaging/sounding wise are perfectly fine, but nothing spectacular IMO.

...Like Clockwork comes in both a 45 and standard 33 1/3 Rpm editions. The cover comes in regular Red, an Indie store exclusive Blue, and also a special Black Friday Record Store Day version with a Black cover, as well.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Are you sure there is a 33 1/3 edition? I bought the plain version

http://www.amazon.com/Like-Clockwork...7329495&sr=1-1

it is 45RPM. I am not seeing a 33 1/3 available.

My mistake. I could have sworn it came in both. I think I was just confusing it with the "Deluxe Edition" packaging, which I also forgot about.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Made my way a little south of the uptown area of Minneapolis and ventured to one of the shops Geofferson mentioned a little while back. Roadrunner was absolutely awesome, they had so many excellent used records I had never come across before. Had to limit myself to just two yesterday but I picked up Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity in absolutely awesome condition.

Also visited Treehouse records and Hymie's...which was probably the coolest record store I've been to this far, just so damn far from where I live.

The Wizard of Id

I'm envious of you people with buttkickin' vinyl shops in arm's reach. South Florida doesn't have all that much (save for a warehouse district sale once in a blue moon). I have to head up to Orlando for some really great stores. :-\

Visiting Amoeba for the first time in 2012 was like Mecca, Lourdes, and Flakowitz's Deli all in one...

Re: The VINYL Thread!

New stuff:

The Band - The Band (original 1969 gatefold)
999 (1977 self titled UK)
Laura Nyro - Season of Lights (live)
Joanna Newsom - Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP (new)
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle (UK 2LP reissue used in shrink) $10

And the following STEALS for 50 cents each:

The Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach (original gatefold)
Elton John - 17-11-70 (live trio) (this album is fucking outstanding. sounds great too.)
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water (original)
Derek and the Dominos - Layla
Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth (Impiule! jazz original 1961)
Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter
Jeff Beck - Truth (original Epic label)

The 999 cover is so quintessential:

Oddly enough, I don't think I have that album. At least not on vinyl. I think I have a CD reissue somewhere. But I have a ton of other 999 vinyl, including a few live recordings. Not all are official releases.

My weekend at Record City netted me:

The Three O'Clock - Aquarius Andromeda (looks to be a collection of alternate versions and other early recordings
Gang of Four - Entertainment (180gm reissue)
Fleetwood Mac - Mirage
and
Dawn of the Dickies, which I bought for a friend to "educate" her on the greatness that is the legendary Leonard Graves Phillips and Stan Lee

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I got a used pro-ject speed box in the mail just now. I'll make a comparison video. Ive heard raves like "the bass is so tight now" and I've heard negatives like "it makes my records sound like CDs." So we'll try it out.
