Unfortunately the HK receiver was DOA.
Oh, it turns on and everything, but no sound. But there was a blown speaker fuse, so I'll be replacing that today after a trip to Home Depot (man, I miss Radio Shack). I expect there's more wrong with it, as the headphones did not work either, and they're not dependent on those fuses. Believe it or not, I'm keeping some hope that it's just dirty pots. You'd be surprised how much they mess things up. My Technics TT from '76 wasn't maintaining speed. I did everything I could to the speed section and even replaced the motor, and it was still wonky. But then a quick shot of DeOxit in the on/off switch and it was good as new. |

Anyway, sounds like a fun project. Good luck! The blown fuse certainly explains the second part of that statement (there's a left and right speaker fuse, only the right was bad). I'm hoping the "scratchy" volume pot explains the rest. It's conceivable that a dirty volume pot is essentially useless, thus me twisting it has no effect on the sound. We'll find out tonight. DeOxit works WONDERS on old electronics. |

Seriously. I took the new HK receiver totally apart tonight, cleaned out all the dust with compressed air. Wasn't even that bad. Then lots and lots of DeOxit into the pots and switches. Replaced both fuses, and bam! Great sound off of both channels, no noise whatsoever. I haven't connected it into my main system yet, I'm only using a pair of old Klipsch bookshelf speakers that were in my garage. But get this: one of my main concerns about adding this was how to connect my subwoofer. The vintage receiver doesn't have a sub-out, obviously. But I'm getting such good bass now just from the mains, I might not even connect the sub! That's how good this vintage H/K receiver is! So yeah, don't get one of those hipster tube amps. Get yourself something old, clean it out with DeOxit, and enjoy the hell out of some vinyl! |

You cannot own electronics without also owning a can of DeOxit. Seriously, it's the best $14.99 you'll ever spend. I've used it to restore vintage guitar amplifiers, my turntable, now this son-I-never-had Harman Kardon receiver.
I suspect that part of the reason this receiver was so cheap ($89 w/free shipping!) is that the seller thought it needed major work. But the DeOxit spray job turned this unit into just as good as the same models I've seen on Ebay and Craigslist for ~$250 or more. I don't have any experience with other vintage amps/receivers, but I can say without a doubt that a 70s era Harman Kardon 330C will absolutely amaze you when you drop the needle on a record. There's a lot more out there, keep looking!! |

Ok, I have a question about spot cleaning. I had a record that I spin-cleaned and it sounds quiet except in one spot where there is a loud click three times that wasn't there before. I'm guessing that when I cleaned the disc, some dirt moved into those grooves and stayed there. What's the best way to focus on that spot, ISO alcohol and microfiber cloth?

Have you tried the glue method? Except you have to do the whole side, not just a "spot".
You pour on enough glue to cover the entire playing surface, use a credit card or something to smooth it out, and wait for it to fully dry. Then peel off. Allegedly, all the dirt deep in the grooves comes off with it. There's YouTube videos showing how to do it. I've had good luck with it, but it is time consuming (overnight for just a single album side) |

Yeah, I heard about the wood glue method, but it looks way too messy and time consuming for the issue I seem to have with just a few grooves on a new release vinyl. :lol: I've heard that method is great though for deep cleaning old records that are really dirty. I've also heard on the Hoffman forums that some folks buy a little protector that you put over the record label (to keep it from getting wet) and then give the record a good cleaning in a sink with soapy water and a very soft paint brush.

I really don't like having my records in shelves where they're only visible from the sides, like books in a library/book-store. So I'm looking to build myself some bins, similar to record-store bins, where you flip through records from the front. Something simple, just different types/thicknesses of plywood should do it.

I have two units like your second picture, but I did not build them myself. They cost around $350 each if I recall, but they're pretty nice. Except I'm starting to overfill them...

Those shouldn't be too difficult to build with some basic woodworking skills.
I actually might do something similar myself. Probably paint the interiors with about ten coats enamel paint, though, as I don't like bare wood touching my stuff. |

Made my yearly Thanksgiving weekend pilgrimage to Old Town Records in Temecula today. Last couple of years it's been a great source for RSD stuff that I didn't want to wake up early on Black Friday for. But I got all the RSD stuff I wanted locally, so this time it was just a dig through the stacks, and a rather fruitful one at that
