No because The Beatles, Richard Thompson and Miles Davis haven't been mentioned.

Weird that you say it like that since Iron & Wine's album "Shepherd's Dog" is exactly that kind of album you're describing, with dynamic flow and a cohesive work that's stronger as a collection of songs rather than each song on it own. Though it's the only I&W album like that - his earlier stuff is just like you described.

That's probably not the one I heard then. I can't remember which one it was.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!

(And easily won. You never mentioned where. Try hitting up the South American rock/metal/thrash scene for a real eye-opener...)

Yep. Just because metal has fallen victim to not being "trendy" in the states doesn't mean it's not big elsewhere.

My wife's family is Ecuadorian/Chinese. Most of them living in Ecuador. When Maiden, Priest, Metallica, et. al. come to town, it's a freakin' event. Massive sellouts. Both sexes. All ages. Ridiculous.

Given the choice between a Motorhead show in Quito or a Mumford & Sons show in Austin? There is no choice Que viva la teta!!

Yeah, I'm in LA/OC, while there's plenty of hard rock around, it's not particularly envogue to a lot of the ladies. Just went to a Fu Manchu show, and I could count on one hand the number of half-way attractive women there. Great, rockin' show though.

Don't pretend you didn't have a tweed jacket under that parka.

They sure do love their metal in South America.

I went to see Maiden do their big Powerslave-era set tour in '08. The closest the came (during the first North American leg) was in New York. Meadowlands, really. Anyway, we flew up (myself, wife, wife's friend, my buddy) and it was an overwhelming sausage fest. The ladies (neither of whom being big Maiden fans) had zero wait to use the ladies room. Not quite the same for the gents.

That said, I wouldn't discount metal chicks on any day, anywhere. We went to see WASP (I know, I know...) 2 years ago at a really small local venue, and it was crawling with really attractive metal women. All depends on what you want, really. If your ideal gal wears a smock, plays the pan flute and looks like Pete Rose, I don't care what music you're into, something is not right son, and why you won't

Holy shit THIS. I've only heard their radio hits but I have to assume all their songs do this. How can anyone listen to an album's worth of this repetitious shit?

you mean like how people have been buying the same AC/DC album for 35 years?

Re: Sick of sentimental, rootsy, earnest, sing-songy guys

Great rant, even if I disagree with some of it.

It's funny, I love about half the bands on Hiro's list (plus The Civil Wars, Lumineers, etc.) and want to kill myself out of sheer boredom with the other half. Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Megafaun, etc. all just do nothing at all to interest me. I'm not really into most Hipster music, but some of it I really like.

The whole neo-folk thing is it's own genre and comparing/contrasting it to Rock music seems silly. I haven't turned on a radio in a couple years (why would need to these days?) so maybe I'm missing that part of the argument, but is this stuff really getting a lot of airplay (outside Mumford and the only good Magnetic Zeros song ever)?

I love AC/DC. Bon and Johnson era. They're good for the heart, because they play simplistic tunes that have such swagger and beat. Malcolm Young is one of the most underrated rhythm guitarists of all time. I appreciate not over thinking music and skill/technique every once and a while. At least they're exciting to see as opposed to a bunch of guys in skinny jeans and patchy beards. IMO

Nah. Nobody's complained about these bands overcompressing their CDs.
