Another vote for Hindu Love Gods (basically: REM - Michael Stipe + Warren Zevon). I wore that album out back in 1990. And I really dug Brian May's Star Fleet Project back in 1984.

I'll also add...

Tinted Windows - Adam Schelsinger (Fountains Of Wayne, and for that matter, Ivy, which is another side project for Schelsinger), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) and Taylor Hanson (Hanson).

Temple Of The Dog - Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden, and a pre Pearl Jam Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder.

Rocket from the Crypt was technically a Drive Like Jehu side project I think.

I really enjoyed the Kostars record (Luscious Jackson side project)

And the Twilight Singers (technically an Afghan Whigs side project?)

Mark Lannegan seems to be a professional side project participant.

Great choice. I am not a big Bowie fan, but I really like that Tin Machine CD.

I was a big fan of WPA, a short-lived side-project in 2009, which had Sean and Sara Watkins, along with Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), and others. The album was good, and their live show was even better.

The Thorns, with Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge, and Shawn Mullins was also a nice album/concert.

And Rockpile being one of my all-time favorite bands, I'll second that nomination!

Nice, never heard of that project I'll have to check it out. And if you like that you a may like Mutual Admiration Society (Phillips and the Watkins siblings), actually saw them on a live music show (can't remember the name) and that's how I discovered Nickel Creek.

Also, if you like Sara Watkins, she was on the Nerdist podcast a few months ago.

Yeah I love the archive, but I never looked for MAS on there, so I'll definitely check it out. And yeah I like Sara's solo stuff as well, so I'll check that out. I pretty much like all of Nickel Creek's side projects, such talented souls. And now that I think of it, catching water in my mouth that Sara had spit out would be refreshing. Thanks for the suggestsions.

Moon Duo is the guitarist from Wooden Shjips' side project. I think Moon Duo is also better than Wooden Shjips.

Grinderman.

Does one-off soundtrack work count? The Edge did one solo soundtrack/score for the film Captive and it's pretty awesome.

In line with the theme I enjoy Mike + the Mechanics and The Power Station or the Moroder team ups like Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder or Giorgio Moroder and Joe Esposito.
