If it's strictly for a 2-channel setup, the Harman Kardon HK3490 is an excellent receiver with phono input for less than $500.

However, the question of whether you "need" a dedicated phono stage is dependent on a number of factors, including how good your ears are, how obsessed you are with sound quality, what records you have in your collection (multiple equalization curves were used on recordings prior to 1954 when RIAA equalization was standardized) and what kind of cartridge you use on your table. When you're talking about doing equalization in the analog domain, it's easy to see why not all phono stages are created equal.

All that said, for an entry-level setup, a receiver like the above with a phono input is more than adequate.

Thanks for the replies guys. I do like the look of that receiver and I have yet to ever own one. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for the next few months to see if the price fluctuates on that receiver and hopefully find a good pair of speakers.

With a Kickstarter goal of 60k, the support ended a day or so ago and they raised 233k. $250 of that came from me.

I was set on the Kickstarter Green version but when they hit 125k raised they introduced a new color, cobalt blue, and thats the one I went with.

they got $175 from me. I do like the Colbalt Blue but I'm just gonna stick with the Black. Wish they had a solid White option.

Got that $175 from me for the black as well. I figured I should probably keep my costs low since I'm just going to be getting started. Anyone have decent speaker recommendations? I'm by no means an audiophile, but who knows, maybe I will be one day.

This thread is gold. I was just thinking about getting into vinyl and didn't know where to start.

They should really offer a version with a preamp built in. A lot of people who are just getting into vinyl probably think they could just connect the turntable up to their receiver and be set.

My Onkyo 705 from 2007 has a Phono jack, so I just made it. Had no idea that newer receivers didn't have it.

They really started taking them out in the mid nineties to late nineties on the lower end receivers. I got a Pioneer in 99 that I was excited to have DTS on but really bummed when I saw it had no phono. The CD sound quality coming through my new DVD player was even more disappointing.

I have Paradigm and Energy speakers. Both sound good to me.

Paradigm speakers range from 150/pair to about 2500/pair.

I would have certainly thought so initially.

$150 a pair isn't a lot.

May get this one just to test the waters. Even if it gives me 1-2 years of enjoyment it will have been worth it.

EDIT - I just noticed this one can be plugged into the computer, so I will probably not get it. I want a 100% analog machine that I can plug into my Onkyo 705. Don't care for USB or computer adaptability.

Don't mean to keep bumping this thread up but I'm sort of excited to be getting into this whole vinyl thing - my first purchase will, ironically, be Julien-K's DEATH TO ANALOG.

I just meant that saying you have Paradigms doesn't narrow down anything.

Moopher - Thats a decent range for speakers.

A pair of Paradigm Atoms are a nice start. The newer Atoms are larger than the old ones. I think the v6 is where they got more powerful. I use them as my surrounds but they would make a very nice main speaker in a mid-sized room.

Take a look at Canadian brands and brands that you dont find in big box stores or who advertise much.

Also, take a look at used speakers. Speakers can last forever (good ones at least). ANd you get great deals on used because of people's upgraditis.

I was leaving the price point up to him.

I bought a pair of Titans off eBay for a song. That's definitely a good way to go for smaller, starter speakers.

Re: So you want to get into vinyl. Kickstarter turntable

Well I appreciate the feedback guys. I just have to keep my eyes peeled for some good speakers on a good deal now. I have tons of time until my turntable will arrive anyway, but at least I have a good starting point for a nice pair of speakers.

Re: So you want to get into vinyl. Kickstarter turntable

One of my best friends just asked me for a turntable for her wedding in October. I put myself on the U-Turn mailing list in the hopes that they'll sell to the general public before then. I want to get them a player that's analog only.

Re: So you want to get into vinyl. Kickstarter turntable

I'm very excited to get mine. Still haven't bought a receiver as the one spoken about in this thread has been sitting in my Amazon cart for some time now. I logged into Amazon a DAY after it had dropped to $315 for a short time and had jumped back up to $449...so I'm holding out hope I will get a receiver with a phono input for a excellent price.
