Growing up in England in the 70's and 80's, I was always a lot more interested by the more underground bands like Crass and Discharge, who came along almost as a reaction to the Pistols and the Clash being seen as "selling out". Having said that, I did see pretty much every punk band except the Pistols in their heyday, including the Clash, Damned, UK Subs, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys, Joy Division etc.
It's a lot harder to shock people nowadays than it was in England in the 70's/80s. I remember my dad finding my Stations Of The Crass LP in 1979 and snapping it in half after he read the lyrics. :) I told Steve Ignorant about that when I saw him last year and he got a good laugh out of it. I also saw Crass when they did The Last Supper tour last year in New York. Yeah it was Steve Ignorant with a backup band (supposedly Penny Rimbaud gave his blessings) but it was still great. That is a funny story about your dad snapping the LP in half after reading the lyrics. I am sure my parents would have done the same. |

I agree that the days of music scenes and labels are pretty much over.
The old scenes were, by and large, geographically specific, and today, with social networking and the internet, everything operates globally now. The whole idea of scenes, like the punk movement in London or the grunge scene in Seattle, where artists of similar sensibilities build off of each other in an isolated location, is a think of the past. And we've also seen the end of records companies like Metal Blade, Stiff, or Sub-Pop, too. There are no more independent record stores... or any record stores at all... to subsidize indie labels. And the cost of running said labels would be so high these days that they would never get off of the ground. And even then, underground artists don't even need record companies. They can self-publish their own music via website, iTunes, CDBaby, or whatever online. |

Venues in good locations for more underground bands are getting fewer & fewer at least in NYC. Alot of the more underground music places in Manhattan
such as Coney Island High & CBGB's have closed. From what I know, the reason CBGB's closed down was because they wanted to raise the rent to $40,000 a month & Hilly Crystal's family could not afford it. Especially since GBGB kept their door prices reasonable and they used a walk up to the door to get in system. They did not deal with any ticket vendors like Ticketmaster. There are some places in Brooklyn that are pretty good, but with the gentrification that is going on over there who knows how long they will last or if they will continue catering to the small bands. |
