You know who hates that Live To Die album? Andrew Bynum. I heard that the last time he heard it, he was so distracted, he slipped on the bowling lane and blew out his other knee.

Re: Best Albums of 2012

So, that Divine Fits single? I've heard it so many times I could've sworn I had it on my iPod. I did not. Strange.

As per usual, there's always a ton of albums that I'll see on people's lists which were unknown to me (especially Black Radio). Some posters mention that this wasn't a good year and their list is stuff I agree wasn't good which leads me to believe that they didn't listen to enough stuff.

Re: Best Albums of 2012

It's actually tough for me to pick my favorite albums of the year because I really enjoyed a lot of what came out this year. I'm sure it helps that there were a lot of solid albums released by some of my favorite artists and groups. There were also some great sophomore releases and a few really impressive new or relatively new acts that broke through this year.

If I had to narrow it down to my top albums for 2012, I think it would end up looking something like this...

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Here
Elizaveta - Beatrix Runs
Mumford & Sons - Babel
Ingrid Michaelson - Human Again
Garbage - Not Your Kind Of People
The Avett Brothers - The Carpenter
Glen Hansard - Rhythm And Repose
Benjamin Gibbard - Former Lives

That's only eight, so I still have two spots left for an actual top ten list. But I'm not ready to pick the final two just yet, so I'll give an honorable mention to...

Two Door Cinema Club - Beacon
Aimee Mann - Charmer
Norah Jones - Little Broken Hearts
Taylor Swift - Red
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
Keane - Strangeland
fun. - Some Nights
Calvin Harris - 18 Months
Eric Prydz - Pryda
Ke$ha - Warrior
Metric - Synthetica

Of Monsters And Men - My Head Is An Animal and Kimbra - Vows were both excellent international debuts in 2011 that were released in the United States in 2012. I think they deserve special, but separate, mention since they fall into a grey area as far as release date is concerned.

My favorite compilation was definitely The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond. Lots of great music on that one from a good variety of artists.

I really enjoyed Bob Dylan - Tempest and The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth when I listened to them, but I just wasn't able to listen to them as critically as I'd have liked.

One of her earlier EPs, Breakfast With Chopin, has been re-released and is available for sale on her website in case you were interested.

Re: Best Albums of 2012

In not quiet specific order, yet, but I suppose close enough with a little juggling. These are the albums I enjoyed listening to the most. I'm sure there's an album or two I might be forgetting, and there's still some new releases on the horizon, but this should about cover it.

**Fixed for proper order, and with a couple of albums I initially forgot to list...

1. The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
2. Divine Fits - A Thing Called Divine Fits
3. Nada Surf - The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy
4. Japandroids - Celebration Rock
5. Van Halen - A Different Kind Of Truth
6. Metric - Synthetica
7. Delta Spirit - Delta Spirt
8. Muse - The 2nd Law
9. Rick Springfield - Songs For The End of The World (Yes, really. If you haven't heard it, then shut up.)
10. Bloc Party - Four
11. Dinosaur Jr. - I Bet On Sky
12. Gary Clark Jr. - Blak and Blu
13. KISS - Monster
14. Our Lady Peace - Curve
15. JD McPherson - Signs & Signifiers
16. Jack White - Blundrebuss
17. The Shins - Port Of Morrow
18. Silversun Pickups - Neck Of Woods
19. Redd Kross - Researching The Blues
20. The Cult - Chiice Of Weapon
21. John Mayer - Born And Raised
22. Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania

Honorable Mention - Only because it was internationally released last year, but didn't hit the States until this...
Gotye - Making Mirrors

Re: Best Albums of 2012

I'm completely out of touch with current music. Here's what I see in this thread so far:

7 for Jack White - Blunderbuss
5 for Metric - Synthetica
4 for Deftones - Koi no Yokan
4 for Rush - Clockwork Angels
3 for Dinosaur Jr. - I Bet On Sky
3 for Elizaveta - Beatrix Runs
3 for Dinosaur Jr. - I Bet on Sky
3 for El-P - Cancer 4 Cure

I haven't even heard of most of these bands. I got some homework to do . . .

Re: Best Albums of 2012

I really wanted Metric's Synthetica to be in my top picks, since Fantasies is one of my favorite albums ever, but I just couldn't get into it.

But kstublen pointed out that Some Nights by fun. was released in 2012... for some reason I was convinced that came out in 2011! So I would definitely add that one to my list.

The first one I can think of that blew me away was Chris Flaherty Big Band's 'Turning Point' album.

Perhaps he has heard of the one that put out an album called I Bet On Sky, but not the other one, further down the list, that, interestingly enough, also put out an album called I Bet On Sky.
