Loved the interview with Stern. The best new info I learned was the original lyrics James wrote for "Enter Sandman" centered around crib death.

Same year I first saw them at Donington. A young and hungry Metallica was something to behold.

Hell Fuckin' Yeah!

First saw them in '88 when Jason first joined and the AJFA album was still in it's early stages. They were amazing.

Woah, James looks old and tired in that Howard Stern clip - they must really be grinding on the promotional Through The Never publicity bandwagon. I've yet to see/hear Nimrod Antal say anything about the film.

To be fair, getting a metal musician out of bed at that time in the morning is a small miracle, I'd imagine. He even said performing this early in the day meant his voice sucked. And he was right.

New Metallica music featured in narrative and concert cuts of 'Through the Never'

AUSTIN - Metallica fans will hear previously released material in the soundtrack to the band's new film "Metallica: Through the Never," but they'll also get to hear new metal material from the foursome should they pick up the movie when it comes out on home video.

Last night (Sept. 25) at Fantastic Fest in the Texas capitol, bassist Robert Trujillo, guitarist Kirk Hammett and the film's director Nimrod Antal took questions from the audience after screening the 3D flick, which combines a scripted feature-narrative with a concert documentary. Antal revealed that there are two additional cuts of the film, which will be available on the DVD/Blu-Ray and other formats of the release. He said one cut is just of the narrative portion to "Through the Never" -- which stars Dane DeHaan as a roadie for the band -- and has "a completely original," "Goblin-esque" soundtrack made by Metallica and producer Greg Fidelman. The other version is just of the concert footage, with "three to four" bonus songs recorded during those live gigs in Vancouver and Edmonton.

Addtionally, Trujillo premiered his Metallica-centered short animated film "'Tallica Parking Lot" last night, which also featured new music from the metal pioneers. Its soundtrack had big, energetic beats as the animations panned through 2D and 3D views of the fans that pre-game at Metallica shows. The film was a collaboration with Titmouse Animation Studio and helped by animators like Mike Judge; characters from "South Park," "Beavis & Butthead," "Metalocalypse" and even the cartoon visages of rockers like Lemmy make cameos.

"'Tallica Parking Lot" and the three total versions of "Metallica: Through the Never" will be bundled together for home video, with release date TBA.

Judging from the technical aspects that went into the making "Through the Never," Antal and the band could've made even a few more films from their shoot. Concert footage for "Through the Never" was captured by 30 cameras at any one time Antal said, which was -- in his words -- "a f*cking nightmare." The stage was fraught with its own perils, and not just metal music wattage: some of the concert props to help tell the "Through the Never" story included Tesla coils, pyrotechnics, falling rocks, sparking light poles and jumbo video screens in the shape of coffins.

Performing was an "occupational hazard," Hammett said. "It's amazing we survived it." Death magnetic, indeed.

The band said they're planning on, at some point, taking that very epic stage concept on tour, though not mentioning when that would be. They're still catching up to the "now." Hammett said called the outcome of "Through the Never" and their collaboration with Antal as "unexpected." He said that he sees old songs like "Ride the Lightning" and "Creeping Death" in a new light, now that the tracks have been married to Antal's horror-apocalypse treatment.

"We would never have thought we'd be in this space three years ago," Hammett said.

Metallica to Rock Antarctica?

Though nothing has been confirmed yet, signs are pointing to a landmark concert this December from metal legends Metallica.

Recently, the Colombian website for Coca-Cola Zero launched a sweepstakes for fans in six Colombian cities whose grand prize is a trip to see a rock concert in Antarctica, sometime between Dec. 2 and 15. Metallica's name can be read several times in the fine print below the main image.

Other less-metal prizes for the sweepstakes winners include eight Gibson guitars and 150 pairs of Sony headphones.

Back in September, drummer Lars Ulrich gave an interview to California's 107.7 The Bone that seems to corroborate the story. "There's a very interesting thing coming our way in December," he said. "If anybody (in management) even knew that I just said what I just said, they would hunt me down and silence me. But there is another frontier coming in December, which we're very excited about."

Back in 2008, Fall Out Boy set out to play the icy continent, but were forced to cancel due to bad weather.

On a much smaller scale, the United States' McMurdo Station has been hosting open mic nights in Antarctica for some time, and in 2007, a five-piece band of British scientists called Nunatak claimed to have played the continent's first rock concert.

Though an Antarctica gig would easily be the most extreme concert of Metallica's year, it wouldn't be the only notable one. Earlier this year, they played the legendary Apollo Theater and celebrated the retirement of the New York Yankees' Mariano Rivera by playing his entrance anthem, "Enter Sandman," live from Yankee Stadium.

Journey To The BOTTOM Of The Earth
October 24, 2013

After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth . . . except for one. That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career as we'll be performing near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Sunday, December 8, 2013.

Latin American fans in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico will be able to enter a contest for the chance to win an Antarctic cruise that sails December 3-10 and will stop at Carlini. We'll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification . . . a real first for us! The show will also be streamed live for our friends in those Latin American countries who cannot join us at the base and filmed to share with everyone at a later date.

To enter the contest to join us in Antarctica, click here: http://www.coca-colazero.com.ar. Contest entry begins on October 28th.

Pack up those warm clothes and we'll see you at the bottom of the planet!

Official Press Release

COCA-COLA ZERO TAKES METALLICA TO ANTARCTICA

Coca-Cola Zero presents "Música Zero", an artistic event that will enable Metallica to perform their world-class music in Antarctica for the first time. Besides the concert given by the band made up of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, this initiative offers their fans the chance to participate in a unique expedition to see the wonders of a place reserved for peace, international cooperation and science.

In order to be part of the trip, fans will have to participate in a contest that is being launched in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico, starting on October 28th and until November 22nd. Candidates will face the challenge of demonstrating what they would be willing to do to live this unprecedented experience and share it through Coca-Cola Zero’s Twitter account (@CocaColaZeroAr) including the hashtag #CocaColaZeroAntartida.

The winners will leave on December 3rd in a cruise from the port of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, headed for Antarctica. During the 10-day journey, they will be able to enjoy the landscapes of this beautiful continent, participate in lectures to be provided by specialists, see audiovisual material on the work of the scientists and receive environmental information.

An exclusive concert

Metallica’s concert will take place in a site set up close to the heliport of the Carlini Argentine Base and will have a feature that will make it absolutely exceptional: it will be broadcasted to the audience through headphones. In addition, Metallica fans of participating countries will be able to enjoy the streaming from Antarctica through the webpage www.coca-cola.tv; www.coca-cola.fm.

From Antarctica to the world

In addition, Coca-Cola Zero will donate equipment for the new laboratory at the Carlini base which concentrates the largest number of Argentinean scientific investigations and international cooperation. Coca-Cola Zero will likewise contribute to disseminate the marvels of this continent through a documentary and the entire “Música Zero” experience will be broadcasted previously and during the event.

Antarctica is under the special stewardship of the Antarctic Treaty and various international forums which, among other aspects, contemplate the possibility of fostering cultural activities to create awareness on the importance of this continent, safeguard Antarctic biodiversity and as an example of international cooperation.

“Música Zero” has complied with the Environmental Impact Assessment developed by the Environmental Management Program and Tourism of the Argentine National Antarctic Directorate (Dirección Nacional del Antártico, DNA) according to the guidelines of the Antarctic Protection Protocol (Madrid Protocol).

Re: The all things METALLICA thread!

Last week, we posted that video of Justin Bieber humming the solo to Metallica's "Fade To Black" and there was mass amounts of butthurt. Metallica themselves were interviewed recently, and I guess the story got back to the interviewer, because they asked Metallica about Bieber, and shocker…

James Hetfield says:

"Are we Beliebers? Yes."

Now obviously, James' tone did not come through in the response. He could've meant it sincerely and he could've been sarcastic about it. Lars Ulrich gave more serious answer:

"Is it possible to have respect for him without being a Belieber? I think the kid's really talented and obviously to go through what he's going through at that early age must be a mindfuck. So the fact that he still goes out there and does it, I admire that and I think he's super talented, so I guess I am kind of a Belieber. If he likes 'One', and Liam Gallagher likes him, OK, there you go."

Bassist Rob Trujillo added "As long as he stays out of trouble, I'll be a Belieber." So overall, the band is being polite and not trying to step on any toes.

Re: The all things METALLICA thread!

So Bieber likes Metallica and their fans got butthurt? Metallica really has the shittiest fans in the world. I wish they would hurry up and put out a new album so we can get more "this is shit, why can't they make Master Of Puppets II?" posts.
