I agree that she plays the victim card a lot too and always seems to have some sort of a beef. You’re the most successful artist in the modern era.. I think you’re just fine and hardly a victim.

She's in a much happier place now and hopefully her next album will reflect that, and be more upbeat and more catchy.

Okay the best podcast series on Taylor Swift -- Every Single Album : Taylor Swift just put up their new podcast on the new album - it's over 2 hours long. I'm going to go jog and listen to it now.

It's her shtick, just as much as Gwar's costumes, Kiss' make-up, or any number of heavy metal bands adorning themselves with inverted crosses and pentagrams.

I am endlessly fascinated by the cult-like obsession with Swift, but I just don't "get" her music at all and she always comes off as phony and affected. Doesn't strike me as being much different than any number of pop tarts out there.

I actually don’t dislike her for the most part. A lot of it is because my wife likes her a lot so I’ve listened to more of her stuff and admittedly some of it is catchy. I just get annoyed by aspects of her songs/persona though.

Peppa Pig dissing TPD by posting a (since-deleted) Tweet with a higher Pitchfork score for their album.

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

1. The Pitchfork TTPD review score is fake; they gave it a 6.6, not a 6.0.
2. The official Peppa Pig post was also fake, not deleted. Plus, that review is from 2021... and by a different writer. Probably someone who was laid off recently.
3. The Pitchfork reviewer set her twitter account to private; people say because of the 'backlash' but who really knows. People go private for all sorts of reasons. I wouldn't be surprised if it's because of assholes telling her she's wrong, though.
4. From the review (which is worth reading):
It’s not Swift’s fault that we’re so obsessed with her, but this album gives the impression that she can’t quite hear herself over the roar of the crowd. Tearjerkers like “So Long, London” and “loml” fall short when every lyric carries equal weight. There’s no hierarchy of tragic detail; these songs fail to distill an overarching emotional truth, tending to smother rather than sting. It would help if Swift were exploring new musical ideas, but she is largely retreading old territory—unsurprising, perhaps, given that the last three years of her life have been consumed by re-recording her old albums and touring her past selves. The new music is colored in familiar shades of Antonoff (sparse drum programming, twinkly synths) and Dessner (suppler, more strings). Songs sound like other songs—“I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” like Midnights’ “Mastermind”; the intro of “So Long, London” like that of Folklore’s “My Tears Ricochet.” Her melodies feel staid, like they are made to fit the music, rather than the other way around.
...
If Swift believes that output for its own sake is what she has to offer, she underestimates her gift. Listeners who believe that her every ounce of experience is inherently interesting—because she was the one to have it—misunderstand her as well. Taylor Swift doesn’t need a whole album to tell the story of a relationship; she only needs one song, sometimes even one line. She almost has it in Tortured Poets’ title track, with the tossed-off brilliance of “We’re modern idiots.” She’s nearly there with the vignette, which needs a bit more burnishing, about her man slipping a ring from her middle to her eager left ring finger at dinner. You can see what she’s chasing here: the moment in time that triggers a flash of feeling that lasts forever—the sort of thing people call Swiftian. We’ve been students of Swift’s poetry for years. The lesson of The Tortured Poets Department is not to push through the pain—it’s to take the time to process it.

I think she's following the comic book industry's model for LP releases.

I would actually love it if she released that "second half" of the album on vinyl.
I like those songs better than what's on the current vinyl.

While I would expect to see it only released as one full set with both halves included in a single set, I too would appreciate a separate second-half-only physical release for those who already bought one (or more) of the numerous other CD/Cassette/Vinyl copies.

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

“Track by Track” commentary version is now up on Amazon Music. There is not, in fact, a commentary for every song; There’s an album intro, an album outro, and intro/commentaries for 5 songs plus a completely random 3 second “here’s another track from my album” song intro.

That new hat was pretty enticing. Second biggest opening week album sales ever - 2.6M copies, behind only Adele 25.

Again though while she definitely is popular and moves units I wonder how many of those sales are from people buying multiple copies for different artwork and bonus tracks. A lot of her fans are diehard so that’s potentially four copies sold.

Another record : Taylor becomes the first artist to occupy the top 14 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 spots. Imagine how weird the American Top 40 program would be, if it were still on the air.

Well, the top 40 used to be just singles - but now, with streaming, it can be any song on an album.

Correct, Having one artist own all top 10 spots has only happened twice, both times were Taylor Swift. The previous was with the launch of Midnights.

Re: Taylor Swift -- Discussion Thread

Since streams now count when it comes to the charts I wish radio would have counted back in the day. I am terrible at math but Stairway To Heaven has been played on radio at least 3 billion times so each person on the planet that heard it one of those times should have been counted. So let's just say that Stairway To Heaven, You Shook Me All Night Long, Dust In The Wind and Start Me Up each stand at over a trillion listens.

I think Drake made the template. He releases a double album years ago that had some pretty bad songs but still dominated the charts because of the volume. If you are a big artist there is little reason to be selective with tracks if you are looking to maximize profits.

Today was the first concert post-TPD. Taylor has added a new Era. She also combined folklore and evermore together, which is a smart move. Took out some other songs as well. Here's the new setlist, with 7 TPD songs per night (+/- a surprise song or two)
