Somebody wanna explain this deadmau5 phenomenon to me

Yes I'm too old for this shit but I still want to know what the fuck is attracting hundreds of thousands of teens to stand in a stadium or field and watch some dude in a mouse mask do basically nothing they can see while they dance around to repetitive electronic bleeps and bloops. I see this mouse mask is on the cover of Rolling Stone this month (a sure sign he sucks). Please tell me I'm not the only one who doesn't get this. It's the drugs right?

He's not the only one. Electronic music is taking off in a big big way.
I don't mind it. Beats the hell out of gangsta rap.

Mainstream trance music is becoming more and more popular. A lot of hip-hop acts rap over electronic music versus your typical beat.

If you like that sort of music (I do), then he's good. It's actually kind of weird seeing artists in that genre going mainstream since they tend to only appeal to a certain crowd.

Everything about your post reads like it was written in 1994.

In 1994 it was Aphex Twin, Autechre, etc.
Now it's Deadmau5, Skrillex, etc.

There was a surge in popularity back then, but it's nothing like it is now.

Well-groomed, likes electronic music, and has a side job as a DJ at a local club.

That describes a?

Never mind.

I never understood the appeal of watching an electronic act perform live. They essentially just press play on a CD player and fiddle with some sound distortion along the way.

You should check out The Residents. Very strange band from years ago. Eyeball masks??

I can't remember the name of the band, but there was an electronic band that opened for the Pixies a couple years back. I'm a huge Pixies fan, so I went to three separate shows. Sitting through that opening band three times was so painful. Plus, you could tell that most of the people in the audience were NOT there to see a performance like that. In fact, at times the audience would get a bit hostile. Maybe if the two people on stage did something more than move some nobs around, they could have won some people to their side.

Just out of curiosity, how do you pronounce it? "dead-maw-five"? "dead-ma-u-five"?

Dead Mouse

the "5" is pronounced as an "S"

Does the mouse head make more sense now?

i saw scorn open for pigface around 99'. it was a guy standing in front of basically a podium turning knobs with bass that made ya wanna throw up it was so deep. it was the most boring performance i have ever seen. funny since later on that night pigface became the best show ive ever seen. they were completely insane and just a ton of fun.

Re: Somebody wanna explain this deadmau5 phenomenon to me

I remember going to see Nitzer Ebb in a club in '92 and my friend and I walked out thinking the next show needs to be an all out guitar assault. I adore electronic music, but there can definitely be something lacking when going to a live show. I'm actually glad to see something like deadmau5 making it big, though. Sure the hell beats the majority of what passes as popular these days.

Re: Somebody wanna explain this deadmau5 phenomenon to me

From what I've seen on youtube, Deadmau5 looks like it's nothing but an excuse to have a fancy light show. And I'm cool with that. The music just the soundtrack for the light show. Can't imagine sitting around and actually listening to it on it's own.

Skrillex, on the other hand, makes me want to harm people (mainly Skrillex himself) with a large, blunt object.

You want to beat him with his own music, very poetic. I like it.

Skrillex is completely awful. Dumbed down, blinding obvious, irritating. deadmau5 isn't half bad, in fact he's pretty good. Also, deadmau5 did a video with Epic Meal Time. He's still the poor man's Daft Punk, though. His latest stage show video (it's on Netflix) shows just how much he's ripping off DP's 2007 tour.

It's pretty damn good, if you're watching the right act.

M83 always put on a hell of a show.

in nashville the Fuck Buttons opened up for the pixies at the ryman in september 2010... while it was definitely a different sound that most were expecting at the pixies concert, I thought it was a lot of fun! 2 guys working keyboards...

Re: Somebody wanna explain this deadmau5 phenomenon to me

Skrillex and Deadmau5 aren't even the same same genre. One is dub step and the other is (predominantly) just trance or electronic.
