As much as I like NIN, I don't think it's that unusual for them to be on this show, that song isn't all that dissimilar to something like EMF or any other number of things that were out at that time aimed at that audience, it's kind of just in hindsight knowing what NIN sounded like later that it seems kind of odd.

I think it has less to do with the "sound" of the song, and more to do with the fact that the band really stands out on the show.

Trent is the least "80's dude" looking member of that group. Well, aside from that leather jacket.
But ugh, how I do not miss that phony sax/trumpet in many 80's pop songs.
