The only part of the Limbaugh fiasco that I'm interested in: Sledgehammer

I could care less about this latest media headline grabber, but ever since the story broke I've been wondering "What does Peter Gabriel think about all this?"

I really like Peter Gabriel, but since Sledgehammer is by far his worst song I feel the need to lambast him a bit. Limbaugh has been using his song for around 20 years. To suddenly act like this is the straw that broker the cammel's back is a bit silly. The truth is he probably is barely aware of Limbaugh, doesn't care how the song is used, and says "Hey, a royalty is a royalty."

I'm also reminded of hearing Chrissie Hynde on the Adam Carolla show a few years ago. He asked her about Limbaugh using her song (The Pretenders song he uses is easily the most frequently heard song on the show) and she didn't really have an opinion one way or the other. She said she gets royalty money on it and anything that gets your music heard is a good thing. I thought she had a very realistic and pragmatic answer to the situation. All this cease and desist stuff just seems like posturing, especially since the artists have no legal grounds.

Ive seen several bands threatening to sue (Rush, Rage Against the machine) for having their music featured on his show

I certainly don't think that is the worst Peter Gabriel song. Most anything from the past 15 years is up for a fight. Your thread made me wonder what Chrissie Hynde thinks of her tune "My City Was Gone" being his official theme tune. Just read on Wiki in '97 she tried to get him to stop playing the song. He donated money to PETA and she backed off. Not sure how accurate that is.

You think Sledgehammer is bad, you should hear remakes like Barry Williams show and Steam.

Adam Carolla has a show? Thought he fizzled out after the demise of the epic "The Man Show."

As far as Sledgehammer, it's unlistenable to me at this point just due to overplaying. But I remember when it came out, I was really impressed with the recording, especially the Tony Levin bass (stick) line, when played really loud.

"Sledgehammer" was on the same album as "We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)", and you still think it's the worst song in Gabriel's entire repertoire?

edit : Come to think of it "We Do What We're Told" is a far more appropriate song to play on the Rush Limbaugh show.

I just realized I fucked up the thread title. The song that Rush played was Big Time. And THAT'S the song I don't like. Carry on.

He has the most downloaded podcast on the net FWIW. If you liked The Man Show, you would probably like the podcast.

It's possible Gabriel just didn't know his song was being used. As long as a station is paying its fees it can use whatever songs it likes. This could be the first time he heard about it. I can imagine there not being a big crossover between Dittoheads and whatever Peter Gabriel fans call themselves.

Horns of Gabriel? Maybe not.

I'd say it's about 100% probablity that Peter Gabriel, living in Bath or wherever he lives barely even knew who Limbaugh is, much less that his song is played as bumper music on his show.

Anyone familiar at all with Gabriel's morals, politics, and worldview, would have no doubt that he'd be against Limbaugh's use of his music. He probably just didn't know about him until this happened.
