Gotye

I can't seem to get enough of this song. Absolutely brilliant. It kicks in at 1:33 and the killer exchange is at 3:01. |
Re: Gotye
I know what you mean. It's a great song; at the same time catchy, but really very intense. I have both his second album (Like Drawing Blood) and his newest (Making Mirrors) and while nothing quite lives up to Somebody That I Used To Know, both have a lot to offer and I'm appreciating more with each subsequent listen.
There's also some pretty good covers out there as well: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/d9NF2edxy-M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dUxLK1misbw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: Gotye
"Somebody That I Used to Know" has to be one of my favorite songs of the last few years or more.
Walk Off the Earth(the 1st cover of it) are from my city :) |
Re: Gotye
I was a special co-host a couple weeks ago on my friends' local radio show and he played Gotye.
We joked around about how you actually pronounce the name, but it was good stuff. |
Re: Gotye
I loved this song until a woman on a flight recently played it on repeat for an hour and a half. Now, I don't need to listen to it.
|
Re: Gotye
That woman was Kimbra and she was just proud.
|
Re: Gotye
In the risk of sounding biased, I prefer the Walk off the Earth cover.
|
Re: Gotye
Funny. I'd heard that song, and the guy's name, on BBC radio a bunch of times, and seen that video linked on people's facebooks, but this is the first time I've linked the two.
It's really quite perfect. A more melancholy version of The Postal Service's "Nothing Better". It's pronounced "Go-tee-yay", like Jean-Paul Gaultier. |
Re: Gotye
He reminds me of the lead singer of Red 7.
|
Re: Gotye
I bought the album when it came out in January and think it's pretty great - lots of good songs, a variety of sounds too. Seeing him at the end of this month, although a friend of mine met him 3 weeks ago and already got my Making Mirrors album signed for me :)

Re: Gotye
Just bought this album MP3 today on Amazon out of curiosity, though I'd heard the single a couple of times. I really like the album. It has kind of a Peter Gabriel / early Phil Collins solo vibe with a little late Police and Steve Winwood elements as well. As a fan of all those artists, I immediately took to this album. I don't know how it's selling overall, but it's been at the top of Amazon's MP3 album chart all week, so he's probably doing okay.

Another cover:

Re: Gotye
Wow, did <i>not</i> expect that voice to come out of her. Cool, but a bit shaky on the chorus part.
And is it just me, or is the guitar player out of tune? |
Re: Gotye
That's a good song, but only as a duet. Singing it solo collapses it down to a whiny breakup song. It loses the dimension of the first singer being at fault as well, but not recognizing it.

Re: Gotye
Honestly I didn't know who this guy was until I saw him on SNL. While watching I thought the music was a bit pretentious.
But now that I heard the song a couple of times it's growing on me. |
Re: Gotye
Friend of a Friend posted this on facebook - Gotye is playing in SF
"So last night @ trivia this nerdy dude comes in and proceeds to answer every question right. I'm like who the fuck is this guy and we end up talking about old exotica records for hours. It turns out it's international pop star GOTYE. Dude knows his shit." http://i.imgur.com/TUlaK.jpg |
Re: Gotye
Brilliant song and the album is pretty great. I'm diggin half of it and the rest is growing on me.
The song is becoming the new Adele as far as hearing it constantly and you just can't seem to get away from hearing endless covers. good for him. I say "Goat-e" because it make me laugh. |
Re: Gotye
from Glee last week... the characters singing are estranged brothers

Re: Gotye
Much prefer the Walk off the earth cover. Love what they are doing there with that guitar. Checked their other videos too, but was not as impressed. This and the Carmen Look at me now cover are my 2 favorite youtube cover songs.

Re: Gotye
Anybody else think In Your Light kinda rips off Stephen Still's Love The One You're With?

Re: Gotye
I enjoy most of this album. There are a couple ungodly horrid songs, but the overall rhthym is good. I really dig "State of the Art"; it reminds me of old Jurassic 5.

Re: Gotye
Chris Martin is jealous
Chris Martin has also become rather enamored with Australian singer Gotye and is jealous he didn't write his hit Somebody That I Used To Know -- just as he also admires Oasis anthem Wonderwall. "Gotye's song inspires jealousy in me," he said. "Just like Wonderwall. Both of them make you slightly angry you didn't write them because they are just that good." <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/whs0Zmx-vn0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Re: Gotye
Photo's dark but here he is at the bar while we're waiting for Janelle Monaé to take the stage.
